Everything happens in this browser, so your images never leave your computer. GIFs get their colors from libimagequant, PNGs are packed by OxiPNG, JPGs made with Google's JPEGli, and every result is scored with SSIMULACRA 2.
This free JPG to GIF converter turns JPG photos into GIFs, in your browser, with a quality score on each.
It blends a photo's colors into the 256 a GIF holds, and tells you how close the result looks. Nothing is uploaded.
Here's why a photo grows as a GIF, when it's still worth it, and how this converter did against CloudConvert.
Key takeaways
What is a JPG to GIF converter?
A JPG to GIF converter turns a JPG photo into a GIF file, for the apps, forums and tools that only take GIF.
A GIF holds up to 256 colors, and a photo has thousands. So the converter picks the best 256 and blends them with fine dots.
When to convert JPG to GIF
Only when an app asks for GIF. For a photo, a GIF is bigger and looks worse than the JPG you started with.
To keep the file small, set a max width in the settings. Half the width made my test GIFs a quarter to a fifth of the size.
Compared with CloudConvert
I converted the same JPGs here and with CloudConvert, at each one's default settings. Then I scored every result against its original:
- Original
- 2.4 MB
- CloudConvert
- 4.8 MB, score 69.4
- This converter
- 5.4 MB, score 76
- Original
- 567 KB
- CloudConvert
- 2.7 MB, score 61.2
- This converter
- 3.1 MB, score 71.3
This converter's GIFs scored 6.6 to 10.1 points higher, with files 11% to 16% bigger.
Both made files 2 to 5.5 times bigger than the JPGs. That's GIF itself, not the converter.
How I tested
I tested on September 30, 2026. The JPGs were a camera photo from my image converter tests, and the camera on a tripod from my background remover's examples.
The score is SSIMULACRA 2, a metric from Cloudinary that compares two pictures the way your eye does:
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 90 and up | Looks identical: no difference even flicking between them at 100% |
| 80 to 90 | Same side by side at 100% |
| 70 to 80 | High quality: hard to notice without comparing |
| 50 to 70 | Medium quality: you can see it up close |
| Under 50 | Visible loss |
Who is the JPG to GIF converter for?
It's for anyone who needs a photo as a GIF:
- Image resizer – anyone making the photo smaller first
- JPG compressor – anyone who can keep the JPG, only smaller
- Image converter – anyone who needs another format
- Remove background – anyone cutting the subject out first
It works in your browser, and your photos never leave your computer.
