Here's what an email countdown timer is, how it works in Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail, and how to use one well.
What is an email countdown timer?
An email countdown timer is an animated image in an email that shows how much time is left until a deadline.
It's drawn the moment someone opens the email, so it shows the time left when they read it, not when you sent it.
How email countdown timers work
Email apps don't run code, so nothing can tick inside an email on its own.
Instead, the timer is an image link. When the email opens, the email app asks navid.me for the image, and navid.me draws the time left right then: 60 frames, one a second, that count down and stop.
Everything your timer needs is in that link: the deadline, the style, the colors and the words. That's why there's nothing to sign up for.
How to add a countdown timer to your email
Copy the HTML in step 3 and paste it into an HTML or code block in your email platform.
If your platform has no HTML block, insert an image from a link instead, and paste the image link. Then link the image to your sales page.
Set the deadline in your own time zone. The timer counts down to that exact moment for everyone, wherever they read it.
Where email countdown timers work
| Email app | What readers see |
|---|---|
| Gmail | The timer counting down, from when the email is first opened |
| Apple Mail | The timer, which can show the time from when the email was first loaded |
| Outlook on the web and the new Outlook | The timer counting down |
| Older Outlook for Windows | The first frame only, which is the right time at that moment |
Gmail and Apple Mail both keep a copy of images, so a timer opened again later can show the earlier time. That's how every email countdown timer works, not just this one.
Tips for email countdown timers that work
- Use a real deadline. When the timer hits zero, the price goes up or the doors close.
- One timer per email, close to the button.
- Link the timer to the page where people act.
- Say the deadline in words too. Some readers block images, so write the date in the email itself.
- Match your email's background, or pick a transparent timer and set your email's color under it.
When to use an email countdown timer
Countdown timers work best when a real moment is coming: a launch opening, a webinar or a virtual summit starting, an early bird price ending, or a cart closing.
