What is a YouTube tag generator?
A YouTube tag generator is a tool that suggests tags for a video. This one takes them from the top videos for your keyword, so every tag comes from a video that ranks, not from a word list.
How to use the YouTube tag generator
Where the tags come from
The tags come in this order:
| Tags | Where they come from |
|---|---|
| The keyword | What you typed, as the first tag |
| Shared tags | Tags 2 or more of the top 10 videos use, the most shared first |
| YouTube's suggestions | What YouTube's search box suggests for the keyword |
| The rest | Tags only one top video uses |
Each tag shows how many of the top videos use it. The keyword and the shared tags come ticked. Suggestions and single tags don't, since only you know which fit your video: a video for students isn't also for nurses.
Other creators' names are left out. On someone else's video they mislead viewers, and YouTube's policies count misleading metadata as spam.
The counter keeps the total within 500 characters, counted YouTube's way: the commas count, and a tag with a space counts its quotes.
What YouTube says about tags
YouTube's help page on tags, read September 27, 2026, says tags are useful when a video's content is commonly misspelled, and otherwise play a minimal role in discovery. The title, thumbnail and description count for more.
So spend a minute on tags and the rest of the time on the title. Add the common misspellings of your main words, the case YouTube names.
Don't overdo it
The same help page warns that adding excessive tags to a video's description is against YouTube's policies on spam, deceptive practices and scams. Tags go in the tags field, and only the ones that describe the video.
