Tags matter less than most creators think. YouTube's help page on tags (read September 27, 2026) says: "Tags can be useful if the content of your video is commonly misspelled. Otherwise, tags play a minimal role in your video's discovery."
The same page says a video's title, thumbnail and description are more important pieces of metadata for its discovery.
A real example
Paste Ali Abdaal's "5 Essential Tips for Long-Lasting Productivity" and the first 2 tags are "Ali Abdaal" and "Ali abdal". The second one is a misspelling of his name, the case YouTube says tags are for.
Its 19 tags use 484 of the 500 characters (checked September 27, 2026).
How YouTube counts the 500 characters
YouTube allows 500 characters of tags on a video, counted its own way, per the YouTube Data API:
- The commas between tags count.
- A tag with a space counts as if it were in quotes, so "time management" is 17 characters, not 15.
The tool counts the same way, so its number matches what YouTube Studio allows.
What to look at instead
A top video's tags show which searches it aims at. The words that count for more are in its title and the first lines of its description, which the tool shows under the tags, with a check on each tag whose words are already there.
