This free inflation calculator shows what money from any year is worth in another, in 187 countries, by each country's own consumer price index. Switch it around and it shows what today's prices become years from now.

I built it because a dollar, a peso or a lira loses value at very different speeds, and that matters the moment you earn in one currency and spend in another.

The calculator reads the World Bank's price index for each country and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' index back to 1913.

Here's how inflation is measured, what it did to money in the US and around the world, and how to keep your savings ahead of it.

Key takeaways

$100 in 1990 buys what $246.40 buys in 2025 in the US, a 146% rise in prices, about 2.6% a year.
$100 from 1913 equals about $3,257 in 2025, by the Bureau of Labor Statistics' index.
From 2015 to 2025, prices rose 7% in Panama and 36% in the US, and ended more than 12 times higher in Turkey.
At 3% a year, what costs $100 today costs $134.39 in 10 years.
Savings that earn less than inflation lose buying power every year, even when the balance grows.

What is an inflation calculator?

An inflation calculator compares money across years by how much prices changed in between. It uses a consumer price index, which tracks what a fixed basket of everyday goods and services costs each year.

If the index is 100 in one year and 150 in another, prices rose 50%, and $100 then buys what $150 buys later. The calculator does that for any two years in its data.

How to use the inflation calculator

It has two modes: looking back, and looking ahead.

The price data loads once from my site, and your numbers never leave this browser.

Where the numbers come from

Every country uses its own price index, from the official source that publishes it.

DataSource
US prices back to 1913Bureau of Labor Statistics, CPI-U, yearly averages
186 other countriesWorld Bank, consumer price index
This year in the USThe latest month published so far

The World Bank publishes each year's index after the year ends, so most countries run to 2025. October 2025 is missing from the US series, so 2025 averages the 11 months the Bureau published.

What $100 is worth today in the US

Here's what $100 from each year buys in 2025, by the US index.

1990$246.40

The steepest single years were 1917 at 17.8% and 1918 at 17.3%, during the First World War, and 1947 at 14.4%, right after the Second. The calculator marks the steepest year in whatever span you pick.

How inflation differs by country

The same 10 years look very different depending on where you hold your money. Here's what 100 in each country's own currency in 2015 equals in 2025.

Panama, where I've been a permanent resident since 2020, uses the US dollar and still saw prices rise far less than in the US. That's the kind of difference the calculator makes easy to see before you move.

The currency converter shows what those currencies are worth against each other today, and tax rates by country shows what you'd keep.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads when you press Try an example.

You have $100 from 1990 in the US. In 2025, it buys what $246.40 buys, because prices rose 146.4% in those 35 years.

That's about 2.6% a year on average. It sounds small, but it more than halved what a dollar from 1990 buys.

Now switch to the future mode. At 3% a year, what costs $100 today costs $134.39 in 10 years.

What inflation means for your money

The Federal Reserve aims for 2% inflation over the longer run. So even when it does its job, a dollar loses about a third of its buying power every 20 years.

Cash loses value every year

Money in an account paying less than inflation buys less each year, even as the balance grows. Keep what you'll need soon in cash, and put long-term money where it can grow faster than prices.

Your returns are only real after inflation

A 7% return with 3% inflation is about 3.9% in real terms. The compound interest calculator and the retirement calculator both take inflation out for you.

Your raise should beat it

A 3% raise in a year of 3% inflation is no raise at all. Use the past mode to check what your old salary is worth today.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the common ways inflation gets misread.

  • Comparing old and new prices without adjusting either
  • Reading one year's spike as the long-run rate
  • Using your home country's inflation for money you'll spend somewhere else
  • Treating a growing balance as growing wealth without checking the real return

Pick the country where you'll spend the money, and the calculator does the rest.

Who is the inflation calculator for?

It's for anyone with savings, a salary or a plan that runs over years, and these tools pair with it.

Check your own country first, then the country you're thinking of moving to.
