Travel medical or full health insurance?
Travel medical insurance covers new, unexpected illness and injury while you travel. It's cheaper, and it's what most nomads start with: SafetyWing Essential, Genki Traveler, World Nomads, Heymondo Long Stay, Ekta and IMG Patriot.
Full health insurance also covers routine care and keeps going long-term, like the cover you'd have at home. It costs more: SafetyWing Complete and Genki Native.

Some insurers price by your country of residence, and some don't sell everywhere. Here's the same 30-day World Nomads Standard trip to Thailand at 30:

Heymondo prices Long Stay in dollars or euros, depending on where you live: $161.53 or €138.06 for its first 90 days. SafetyWing, Genki, Ekta and IMG charge the same wherever you live.
What each plan does in the US
Health care in the US is expensive, so many nomad plans leave it out, charge more for it or limit it:
- SafetyWing Essential – US cover is an add-on: $116.20 every 4 weeks instead of $62.72 at 30
- SafetyWing Complete – the US comes with Hong Kong and Singapore as an add-on
- Genki Traveler – the US and Canada are covered for emergencies only, for the first 7 days of each stay, unless you add more
- Genki Native – cover in the US is limited
- World Nomads – the US costs extra: add it to your trip
- Heymondo Long Stay – the world with the US costs $296.01 instead of $161.53 for 90 days
- Ekta – its worldwide price already includes the US
- IMG Patriot – it covers the world except the country you live in, so the US is in it unless you live there
Does it meet my visa's insurance rule?
Many digital nomad visas ask for health insurance, and some name a minimum amount. Italy and Romania ask for at least €30,000, Latvia for €42,600, and Thailand's Long-Term Resident visas for USD 50,000.

Questions about health insurance as a nomad? Here's what to know.
At 30, SafetyWing Essential costs $62.72 every 4 weeks and Genki Traveler €63.90 a month.
Full health insurance costs more: Genki Native Basic is €198 a month at 30.
Often not in full: SafetyWing sells US cover as an add-on, World Nomads and Heymondo charge more with it, and Genki limits it.
Ekta's worldwide price includes the US, and IMG Patriot covers it unless you live there.
Travel medical insurance covers new, unexpected illness and injury while you travel.
Full health insurance also covers routine care and keeps going long-term.
SafetyWing's plans and Heymondo don't, and Genki Traveler excludes conditions treated or diagnosed in the year before.
IMG Patriot covers a sudden flare-up if you're under 70, and Genki Native looks at them case by case.
It depends on the visa: some only ask for health insurance, others name a minimum or where it must be valid.

Ekta says any age up to 100, and IMG Patriot quoted every age up to 99.
For some insurers, yes: World Nomads prices by your country of residence and doesn't sell to every country, and Heymondo prices in dollars or euros depending on where you live.
SafetyWing, Genki, Ekta and IMG charge the same wherever you live.
