This free dog age calculator turns your dog's age into human years 2 ways: by a 2020 DNA study, and by the rule of thumb vets use.

It also tells you when your dog counts as a senior for its size, and when it "turns" 40, 50, 60 and 70 in human terms.

I built it because the ×7 rule everyone knows is wrong, and the better answers are buried in a science paper and a vet school page.

Here's how both methods work, a worked example, and what they can't tell you.

Key takeaways

The ×7 rule is a myth: the American Veterinary Medical Association says plainly that dogs don't age 7 human years a year.
A 2020 DNA study of 104 Labradors gives human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, so a 1-year-old is about 31 and a 5-year-old about 57.
The vets' rule of thumb: 15 human years for the first year, 9 for the second, then 5 for each year after.
Dogs grow up fast and then slow down, which is why both methods give a big number early on.
Size matters most for when a dog is a senior: from 6 to 7 for giant breeds, 8 to 11 for small ones.

What is a dog age calculator?

A dog age calculator turns a dog's age into the human age it's most like.

There's no single right answer. A dog's body isn't a small human's, so every method is a comparison: at what human age do people go through what this dog is going through?

Why the ×7 rule is wrong

The ×7 rule likely came from average lifespans, about 10 years for a dog and 70 for a person, as UC Davis's School of Veterinary Medicine explains.

But dogs don't age at a steady pace. A 1-year-old dog can have puppies, and a 7-year-old can't run like it did.

So ×7 makes young dogs far too young and old dogs too old. By ×7, a 1-year-old is 7. By the DNA study, it's about 31.

The DNA study's formula

In 2020, researchers at UC San Diego compared how DNA methylation, a chemical mark on genes that changes with age, builds up in dogs and people.

They studied 104 Labrador retrievers from puppies to 16 years old, and 320 people, as the National Institute on Aging describes. Their formula, from the paper in Cell Systems:

Human age, from a dog's age in years
A 0-year-old dog, in human years
A 0-year-old dog
A 0-year-old dog

The "ln" is the natural logarithm, the button on any calculator. It grows fast at first and slowly later, the way dogs age.

The NIA puts it in plain terms: an 8-week-old puppy is like a 9-month-old baby, and a 12-year-old Labrador like a 70-year-old.

The vets' rule of thumb

The AVMA and the American Kennel Club use a simpler rule for a medium-sized dog:

The vets' rule0/3

It gives smaller numbers than the DNA study for middle-aged dogs, and bigger ones for old dogs. A 12-year-old is 74 by the rule and 71 by the DNA study.

When is a dog a senior?

Bigger dogs age faster and live shorter lives. The AVMA's senior pets page gives these ages, from the American Kennel Club:

Small or toy
Weight
Under 20 lb (9 kg)
Senior from
8 to 11 years
Medium
Weight
20 to 50 lb (9 to 23 kg)
Senior from
8 to 10 years
Large
Weight
50 to 90 lb (23 to 41 kg)
Senior from
8 to 9 years
Giant
Weight
Over 90 lb (41 kg)
Senior from
6 to 7 years

That's why the calculator asks for the size: it changes when your dog needs senior care, not the human age.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: a large dog, 5 years old.

By the DNA study, 16 × ln(5) + 31 = 16 × 1.609 + 31 = 56.8, so about 57.

By the vets' rule, 15 + 9 + 3 × 5 = 39. By ×7, it would be 35.

A large dog is a senior from 8 to 9, so this one has about 3 years to go.

What these numbers can't tell you

The DNA study looked at 1 breed, so it's a comparison, not a diagnosis.

  • Reading the human age as your dog's health: a fit 10-year-old can be in better shape than an unfit 7-year-old
  • Using the DNA formula for a newborn puppy: it only works from a few weeks old
  • Expecting a small breed and a giant breed to age the same: size changes when old age starts
  • Skipping vet checkups because the number looks young

Your vet knows your dog's breed and health, and that beats any formula.

Who is the dog age calculator for?

It's for any dog owner curious about their dog's age, and these tools help around it.

Your dog is probably older than ×7 says, so give it the walk today.

Dog Age Calculator FAQs

Questions about the dog age calculator? Here's what to know.

A dog age calculator turns your dog's age into the human age it's most like.

This free one uses the 2020 DNA study and the vets' rule of thumb, and shows when your dog counts as a senior.

Type your dog's age into the calculator, and it gives 2 answers.

The DNA study's formula is 16 × ln(age) + 31, and the vets' rule is 15 for the first year, 9 for the second and 5 for each year after.

No, the AVMA says dogs don't age 7 human years a year.

A 1-year-old dog is about 31 in human years by the DNA study, or 15 by the vets' rule.

About 57 by the 2020 DNA study, or 39 by the vets' rule for a medium dog.

About 68 by the DNA study, or 64 by the vets' rule.

It's human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, from a 2020 study in Cell Systems.

Researchers at UC San Diego built it by comparing DNA methylation in 104 Labradors and 320 people.

The study only looked at Labrador retrievers.

Breeds age differently, so treat it as a guide for other dogs.

The AVMA gives 8 to 11 years for small dogs, 8 to 10 for medium, 8 to 9 for large and 6 to 7 for giant breeds.

Larger breeds tend to live shorter lives, so old age starts sooner.

That's why the calculator asks for your dog's size.
