This free markup calculator turns your cost and your price into markup and margin, or finds the price for the markup or margin you want.

It shows the profit, where the price goes, and the same cost at the markups shops talk about.

I built it because markup and margin get mixed up all the time, and a 50% markup is only a 33% margin.

Here's the difference, the formulas, and a worked example.

Key takeaways

Markup is profit ÷ cost. Margin is profit ÷ price. Same profit, 2 percents.
A product that costs $50 and sells for $80 has a 60% markup and a 37.5% margin.
To double your cost is a 100% markup, but only a 50% margin.
Price from a markup: cost × (1 + markup). Price from a margin: cost ÷ (1 − margin).
A margin can never reach 100%, but a markup can go as high as you like.

What is a markup calculator?

A markup calculator works out how much you add on top of your cost to set a price, as a percent.

Shops and makers think in markup ("I add 50%"). Accountants and investors think in margin. This calculator gives you both from any one of them.

Markup vs margin

Both start from the same profit: price − cost.

Profit ÷ cost
Profit ÷ price

Because the price is bigger than the cost, the margin is always the smaller number. That's where pricing mistakes come from: someone aiming for a 50% margin adds 50% to the cost and gets only 33%.

To turn one into the other: markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin), and margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup).

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: a product that costs $50 and sells for $80.

The profit is $80 − $50 = $30. The markup is $30 ÷ $50 = 60%, and the margin is $30 ÷ $80 = 37.5%.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the pricing slips that cost money.

  • Adding the margin you want to your cost as a markup
  • Leaving costs out: shipping, fees and returns all belong in the cost
  • Comparing your markup to another business's margin
  • Pricing from cost alone, without checking what buyers pay elsewhere

Who is the markup calculator for?

It's for anyone who sells something, and these tools help around it.

Markup Calculator FAQs

Questions about the markup calculator? Here's what to know.

A markup calculator works out how much you add to your cost to set a price, as a percent.

This free one gives the margin and the profit too, from any one of the price, the markup or the margin.

Markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost.

A product that costs $50 and sells for $80 has a 60% markup.

Markup is profit ÷ cost, and margin is profit ÷ price.

The same $30 profit on a $50 cost and an $80 price is a 60% markup and a 37.5% margin.

No, a 50% markup is a 33.3% margin.

A 50% margin needs a 100% markup.

Price = cost × (1 + markup).

A $50 cost with a 60% markup sells for $80.

Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin).

A $50 cost with a 37.5% margin sells for $80.

Markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin).

A 40% margin is a 66.7% markup.

No, a margin can't reach 100%, since the price would have to be all profit.

A markup has no such limit.

It depends on your costs, your market and what buyers pay elsewhere.

Use the calculator to compare prices, then test one.
