What is a RAR to ZIP converter?

A RAR to ZIP converter opens a RAR archive and puts its files into a ZIP, the archive every computer opens.

RAR is WinRAR's format, and only WinRAR and apps its maker licenses make RAR files. So many computers need an extra app to open a RAR, but none need one for a ZIP.

Why a ZIP is easier

Send a ZIP, and whoever gets it double-clicks it. Send a RAR, and they may have to find and install an app first.

The ZIP holds the same files, in the same folders. Pick Normal compression for the usual size, Smallest to squeeze it a little more, or No compression to be quickest.

7z and TAR too

The converter opens anything 7-Zip opens: 7z archives, TAR, TAR.GZ and TGZ, GZ, BZ2, XZ, ISO and more. Each becomes a ZIP.

Compared with CloudConvert

I ran a RAR5 archive and a password-protected 7z through this tool and through CloudConvert's archive converter on September 30, 2026. Both opened them, and both ZIPs held every file.

CloudConvert took 2.5 and 2.9 seconds, with the upload. This tool took under a second in the browser, after its engine loaded the first time.

The difference that matters is the password: with CloudConvert, it goes to their server with your file. Here, neither leaves your computer.

Nothing is uploaded

The tool runs 7-Zip, the open-source archiver, compiled for the web, in your browser. Your files and your passwords never leave your computer.

The first time, the engine downloads, about 1.7 MB. After that it starts at once.

What it can't do

A few archives don't work here:

• RARs split into parts – like .part1.rar and .part2.rar. Join them in WinRAR or 7-Zip first.
• Making a RAR – only WinRAR and apps its maker licenses make RAR files, so the tool opens RARs and doesn't make them.
• Very big archives – a browser tab has a few GB of memory.

For those, WinRAR or 7-Zip on a computer does the job.
