This free cat age calculator turns your cat's age into human years, using the chart vets give cat owners, and tells you your cat's life stage.

It shows the next stage and when it starts, and the full chart from kitten to super senior.

I built it because the ×7 rule is even further off for cats than for dogs. A 1-year-old cat is grown up, not a 7-year-old child.

Here's the chart, how it works, and what each life stage means.

Key takeaways

A cat's first 2 years equal about 24 human years: 15 by the first birthday, 24 by the second.
After that, each cat year adds about 4 human years, so an 8-year-old cat is about 48.
The chart comes from International Cat Care, and its life stages match the 2021 AAHA and AAFP guidelines.
The 6 life stages: kitten, junior, adult, mature, senior and super senior.
A cat is a senior from 11 and a super senior from 15.

What is a cat age calculator?

A cat age calculator turns a cat's age into the human age it's most like.

Cats grow up fast: a 6-month-old cat is like a 10-year-old child, and a 1-year-old like a 15-year-old. Then they slow right down.

How the cat age chart works

The calculator follows International Cat Care's chart, which vets in its Cat Friendly Clinic programme hand to owners.

How it counts0/4

So an 8-year-old cat is 24 + 6 × 4 = 48. A 16-year-old is 80, and a 20-year-old 96.

The 6 life stages

Each stage needs different care, which is why the stage matters more than the number.

Kitten
Cat's age
Birth to 6 months
Human years
0 to 10
Junior
Cat's age
7 months to 2 years
Human years
12 to 24
Adult

Human years
28 to 40
Mature
Cat's age
7 to 10 years
Human years
44 to 56
Senior
Cat's age
11 to 14 years
Human years
60 to 72
Super senior
Cat's age
15 years and up
Human years
76 and up

The stages match the 2021 AAHA and AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines, which vets use to plan checkups.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: a cat 8 years old.

The first 2 years make 24. The 6 years after add 6 × 4 = 24. So 24 + 24 = 48 human years.

At 8, the cat is in the mature stage, and it turns senior at 11, in 3 years. By ×7, it would be 56.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the ways cat ages get misread.

  • Using ×7: it makes young cats far too young
  • Treating a junior cat as a kitten: by 1, a cat is fully grown
  • Waiting for signs of age before senior checkups: cats hide pain well
  • Guessing a rescue cat's age without asking a vet, who can tell from the teeth

Who is the cat age calculator for?

It's for any cat owner, and these tools help around it.

Your cat is older than it looks, so book the checkup that matches its stage.
