Internal links are the links from one page of your site to another, and they're how readers, and Google, find their way around.

This free internal link checker reads any live page and lists every link on it: the ones to your own site and the ones to other sites, with the words each one uses and whether it's nofollow.

The full SEO report of the same page comes with it, so you see the links in the context of everything else.

I built it because I wanted to see all of a page's links in one list, without clicking through it... and because the words on internal links are something I got wrong for years.

So here's why internal links matter, what good ones look like, and how I use them to help new pages get found.

Key takeaways

Internal links connect your pages, and Google follows them to find and understand every page on your site.
The words on a link, its anchor text, tell readers and Google what the linked page is about.
A page with no links pointing to it is hard for Google and people to find.
Link your strongest pages to the new pages you want found.
Google can only follow a link that's a real HTML link with an address.

An internal link checker is a tool that lists every link on a page, split into links to your own site and links to other sites.

It shows the anchor text of each one, and whether it carries nofollow, so you can see at a glance how a page connects to the rest of your site.

Google's guide to links says it uses links to find new pages, and as a signal of what pages are about.

And internal links are the ones you control completely.

For me, they do three jobs:

  • Help Google find pages – a new page linked from a strong one gets found and revisited faster.
  • Tell Google what a page is about – the words on the link describe the page it points to.
  • Keep readers going – a good link at the right moment is the next thing they read.

A real example: my guide to starting a blog

I ran my how to start a blog guide through the checker to see how it connects to the rest of my site.

Measurehow to start a blog
Internal links82
External links62
External links with nofollow4

82 internal links is a lot, which makes sense for a long guide that points readers to tools and other posts at each step.

The 62 external links are mostly to the tools and sources it recommends, and the four nofollow ones are the kind of links I don't want to vouch for.

What good anchor text looks like

Google's guide asks for anchor text that's descriptive, reasonably short and relevant to the page it links to.

So "how to choose a domain name" tells a reader, and Google, exactly what's on the other side, while "click here" tells them nothing.

This is how I write them:

A page with no internal links pointing to it is called an orphan page.

Google can still find it through your sitemap, but readers can't, and it gets none of the value your other pages could pass to it.

When I publish something new, I add links to it from two or three related pages that already get visits... it's the quickest way I know to get a new page noticed.

There's no set number, and Google doesn't give one.

Link wherever it helps the reader take the next step, and stop when a link would only be there for SEO.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Click here and read more as anchor text
  • The exact same keyword on every link to a page
  • Links in JavaScript or buttons that aren't real HTML links
  • Linking only from the footer or the menu
  • Leaving new pages without a single link pointing to them

It's for anyone with more than a handful of pages:

And if you've just published something, this is the first check I'd run on the pages that should link to it.

Internal Link Checker FAQs

Questions about internal links? Here's what to know.

It's a tool that lists every link on a page, to your own site and to others.

It shows each link's words and whether it's nofollow.

They're links from one page of your site to another.

They help readers find more and help Google find every page.

Internal links go to your own site, and external links go to other sites.

The checker lists them separately.

Google follows them to find pages and reads their words to understand what each page is about.

They're also the links you fully control.

It's the clickable words on a link.

Descriptive words tell readers and Google what's on the other side.

There's no set number.

Link wherever it helps the reader take the next step.

It's a page no other page on your site links to.

Readers can't find it, and it gets none of your other pages' value.

Usually not, because you want Google to follow them.

Keep nofollow for links you don't want to vouch for.

Only if they're real HTML links with an address.

A button that runs a script isn't a link Google can follow.

Yes, it's free, with no sign-up.
