This free MOV to MP4 converter turns MOV videos, like the ones from an iPhone or a Mac, into MP4s that play everywhere, in your browser.

Most MOVs hold H.264 or HEVC video, which MP4 takes as it is. So they're copied into an MP4 in a moment with nothing lost, and nothing is uploaded.

Here's why iPhone videos are MOVs, when to pick "Plays everywhere", and how it compares with CloudConvert.

Key takeaways

This free MOV to MP4 converter turns iPhone and Mac MOV videos into MP4s in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
Most MOVs are copied into an MP4 in under a second, with the picture and sound exactly as they were.
iPhones record HEVC, which some older players and PCs don't play: pick Plays everywhere to re-encode it to H.264.
In my test, CloudConvert took 6.6 seconds with the upload, and re-encoded the video.

What is a MOV to MP4 converter?

A MOV to MP4 converter moves a video from Apple's QuickTime format, MOV, into MP4, the format every phone, player and site takes.

MOV and MP4 are close cousins. Both can hold the same H.264 and HEVC video, so converting is usually just a new box around the same picture and sound.

Why iPhone videos are MOVs

iPhones save video as MOV. In the default High Efficiency setting, the video inside is HEVC, also called H.265, which takes about half the space of H.264.

Apple explains that Most Compatible, under Settings, Camera, Formats, records H.264 instead. That one plays everywhere.

Same quality, or plays everywhere?

Pick by where the video is going:

  • Same quality, instant – copies the video and sound as they are, in a moment. Right for Macs, iPhones, new Windows PCs and most sites.
  • Plays everywhere – re-encodes HEVC to H.264, in about 12 seconds a minute of 1080p on my Mac. Right for older players, older PCs and editors that won't open HEVC.

If an MP4 made the instant way won't play somewhere, convert it again with Plays everywhere.

Compared with CloudConvert

I ran the same 10-second files through this converter and through CloudConvert, a popular online converter, on September 30, 2026. The score is how alike the result looks to the original, where 1 is identical:

iPhone MOV (HEVC) to MP4
This converter
Under a second, copied, nothing lost. Or 2 s re-encoded to H.264, score 0.990
CloudConvert
6.6 s with the upload, re-encoded, score 0.993

CloudConvert's servers re-encode with x264, the best H.264 encoder, so its files came out about a quarter smaller at a similar score. This converter uses your device's own encoder, copies when it can, and never uploads your video.

Nothing is uploaded

Most online converters send your video to their server and send back the result. This one converts in your browser, with the video encoders built into it.

So your video never leaves your computer, there's no upload to wait for, and there's no size limit but your computer's memory.

Who is the MOV to MP4 converter for?

It's for anyone filming on an iPhone or a Mac:

Families use it to send phone videos to anyone, on any device.
