This free video to GIF converter turns any part of a video into a looping GIF, in your browser. Pick where it starts, how long it is, its width and its frames a second.

It keeps the GIF small: one palette for the clip, and pixels that don't change cost almost nothing. Nothing is uploaded.

Here's how to keep a GIF sharp and small, and how it compares with CloudConvert.

Key takeaways

This free video to GIF converter turns MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM clips into looping GIFs, in your browser.
Pick the start, the length, the width and the frames a second: 480 wide at 12 a second is sharp and small.
In my test, a 10-second GIF came out at 995 KB, where CloudConvert's was 1,430 KB with a visible dot pattern.
A GIF has no sound and 256 colors, so it suits short loops, not long videos.

What is a video to GIF converter?

A video to GIF converter turns part of a video into a GIF, a picture that plays a short loop in any chat, email or slide.

GIFs have no sound and up to 256 colors a frame. So they're for short moments: a reaction, a demo, a step in a tutorial.

Make a GIF from a video0/4

Keep it sharp and small

A GIF grows with every pixel and every frame, so these settings matter most:

  • Width – 480 pixels is sharp in any chat. 800 is for slides.
  • Frames a second – 12 is smooth for most clips. 20 or 24 is for fast motion.
  • Length – 3 to 6 seconds loops well. Past 15, an MP4 is the better file.

The converter picks one palette of 255 colors for the clip from its frames. A pixel that barely changed from the frame before is left see-through, so it costs almost nothing.

Compared with CloudConvert

I ran the same 10-second files through this converter and through CloudConvert, a popular online converter, on September 30, 2026. The score is how alike the result looks to the original, where 1 is identical:

MP4 to GIF, 10 s at 480 wide
This converter
About 1 s, 995 KB
CloudConvert
5.6 s with the upload, 1,430 KB

CloudConvert's GIF used a dither pattern, a grid of dots that fakes extra colors. This one looked closer to the video, and was a third smaller.

Nothing is uploaded

Most online converters send your video to their server and send back the result. This one converts in your browser, with the video encoders built into it.

So your video never leaves your computer, there's no upload to wait for, and there's no size limit but your computer's memory.

Who is the video to GIF converter for?

It's for anyone who explains things with short loops:

Support teams use it for how-to steps in help articles.
