What is an audio converter?
An audio converter turns a sound file from one format into another, like WAV into MP3, or a video into just its sound.
This one reads WAV, MP3, M4A, AAC, MP4, MOV, WebM, OGG and FLAC, and writes MP3, WAV or M4A.
MP3, WAV or M4A?
Each format is right for a different job:

WAV is the one to edit, and MP3 is the one to publish. Converting an MP3 to WAV doesn't bring back what MP3 compression took out.
What Apple asks for
Apple publishes the bit rates it recommends for podcasts:

That's from Apple's audio requirements, which also set the loudness: around -16 LKFS, give or take 1 dB, with no true peak over -1 dBFS.
The converter marks Apple's range in its quality list. For a spoken show, mono at 96 kbps is inside it, and half the size of stereo at 192.
How big each setting gets
The size of an hour of audio at each setting:

MP3 and M4A sizes are the bit rate times the length, whatever is being said. WAV depends on its sample rate, its bit depth and its channels.
Even out the loudness
Tick "Even out the loudness" and the converter measures your audio first, then brings it to the level podcasts use: -16 LUFS for stereo, as Apple asks.
It measures to ITU-R BS.1770, the standard behind Apple's LKFS. On the example, it reads -23.4 LUFS, the same as FFmpeg's own loudness meter.
A mono file goes to -19 LUFS instead. Players put mono on both speakers, where it sounds 3 dB louder than it measures.
So -19 in mono sounds like -16 in stereo. That's the rule Auphonic and Google's loudness guidelines use.
A limiter keeps every peak under -1 dB, Apple's true peak ceiling. It looks 5 milliseconds ahead, so it lowers a peak smoothly instead of clipping it.
Tags and cover art
MP3 and M4A files can carry a title, an artist or show, an album, a year and cover art. Players show them, and so do phones.
Add them under "Add tags and cover art". Apple asks for square art from 1400 to 3000 pixels, and the converter tells you when yours fits.
Nothing is uploaded
Most online converters send your file to their server and send back the result. This one converts in your browser, so your file never leaves your computer.
That's why there's no size limit but your computer's memory, and why a long recording works too.
