Everything happens in this browser, so your fonts never leave your computer. Only the file's wrapper changes: every letter, its kerning, its ligatures and any variable axes come through.
This free font converter turns TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 fonts into each other, in your browser. Every letter, its kerning, its ligatures and a variable font's axes come through.
WOFF2 makes a font about half the size for your website, and TTF or OTF is for installing on a computer. Nothing is uploaded.
Here's which format to pick, what comes through, and how it compares with CloudConvert.
Key takeaways
What is a font converter?
A font converter turns a font file from one format into another, like a desktop TTF into a WOFF2 for a website.
TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 all hold the same thing, a font's tables. WOFF and WOFF2 compress them for the web; TTF and OTF are the fonts computers install.
Which format to pick
Each format is right for a different place:
- What it is
- The web's font format, compressed with Brotli
- Use it for
- Websites: the smallest, read by 97% of browsers
- What it is
- The first web font format, compressed with zlib
- Use it for
- Websites that must work in very old browsers
- What it is
- The font as computers install it
- Use it for
- Your computer, design apps, print
TTF and OTF differ in the letters' outlines: TrueType curves or PostScript ones. The converter gives back whichever the font has.
What comes through
A font file is a wrapper around tables: the letters' outlines, the spacing between pairs (kerning), ligatures, a variable font's axes, and hinting for small sizes.
This converter only changes the wrapper, so every table comes back. I checked it table by table on six fonts with fontTools, the standard font toolkit:
- WOFF – every table came back byte for byte.
- WOFF2 – every letter and every table, but the digital signature (DSIG), which the WOFF2 standard drops, as every WOFF2 tool does.
Nothing is redrawn, so the letters look exactly as their designer made them.

Most took under 2 seconds in Chrome on my Mac. The Japanese font, with nearly 18,000 letters, took 20 seconds.
Compared with CloudConvert
I converted the same six fonts to WOFF2 with CloudConvert on September 30, 2026:
- This converter
- The same size, every table kept
- CloudConvert
- The same size, every table kept
- This converter
- Every table kept, outlines unchanged
- CloudConvert
- About 30% smaller, but its outlines redrawn as TrueType
For TrueType fonts, CloudConvert uses the same WOFF2 engine as this converter, Google's. For OpenType fonts it switched to another program, which redrew the letters' curves.
The redrawn font also lost the names of its stylistic sets, like Slashed zero and Capital figures. This converter keeps the original curves and every name.
Use it on your site
When you convert to WOFF2 or WOFF, the converter writes the @font-face rule for you: the font's family, its weight, its style, and font-display: swap, so text shows while the font loads.
A variable font gets its full weight range, like 400 700 for Lora, so one file covers every weight. Copy the rule into your CSS and put the font file next to it.
Check the license first
A font is software, and its license says where you can use it. Open fonts like Google Fonts' allow websites, apps and print.
Many fonts you buy license desktop use and web use separately. The converter shows each font's own license line, with its link, so you can check before you publish.
Nothing is uploaded
The converter runs in your browser, so a font you paid for never leaves your computer. There's no size limit but your computer's memory.
The first WOFF2 conversion downloads the engine, about 1 MB. After that it starts at once.
What it can't do
Some changes are more than a new wrapper:
- TTF to OTF, or OTF to TTF – that means redrawing every curve, which changes the font. You get back the outlines the font has.
- EOT and SVG fonts – formats only very old browsers used.
- Removing letters – making a font smaller by keeping only the letters you use (subsetting) isn't here yet.
For those, a desktop font editor like FontForge does the job.
Who is the font converter for?
It's for anyone who works with type:
- DESIGN.md generator – designers setting up a site's type
- Website to HTML converter – developers rebuilding a page with its fonts
- Compress image – anyone making a site load faster
- SEO checker – site owners checking a page's speed and setup
Brand teams use it to ship their typeface to every site they run.

Here are my other font converters, and two for what comes next:
- TTF to WOFF2 – web fonts about half the size
- WOFF2 to TTF – a web font you can install
- DESIGN.md generator – your fonts and colors as a design file for AI
- Compress image – the other half of a fast page
They're all free, in your browser, with no watermark.
