What is a Wi-Fi spot?

A Wi-Fi spot is a café, library, restaurant or bar where you can get online. Some offer free Wi-Fi to anyone, and most expect you to buy something.

The finder shows the spots that OpenStreetMap marks as having Wi-Fi, so you can find one near you without walking around with your laptop out.

Who is the Wi-Fi spot finder for?

It's for anyone who needs to get online away from home:

A café with good Wi-Fi is a small thing that makes a week in a new city easier.

Counts cover spots with a name on OpenStreetMap; many more cafés have Wi-Fi without it being mapped.

Free Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi for customers

OpenStreetMap marks some spots as free Wi-Fi and others as Wi-Fi for customers. Many don't say either way.

For a long stay, a library or a café where you buy lunch is the kinder choice. The free filter shows only the spots marked free.

How to stay safe on public Wi-Fi

Shared Wi-Fi is convenient, and anyone else on it shares it too. Here's what I do:

  • Use a VPN – it encrypts everything between your laptop and the internet
  • Check the network name – ask staff, since fake networks with similar names exist
  • Stick to HTTPS – most sites use it now, and your browser warns you when one doesn't
  • Turn off sharing – switch off file and printer sharing on public networks

My VPN comparison shows what each VPN costs and how fast it is.

Where the data comes from

The spots come from OpenStreetMap: cafés, libraries, restaurants, fast food places and bars tagged with Wi-Fi within 4 km of each place, read 2026-09-30. OpenStreetMap's data is open under the ODbL.

A spot shows only what the map holds, never a speed nobody measured. Anyone can add a missing spot on openstreetmap.org.

The finder shows every spot for each place.

It's safe enough with care, since others share the same network.

Use a VPN, check the network name with staff, and stick to HTTPS sites.

The map doesn't hold speeds, so the finder never shows one it didn't measure.

Run the internet speed test at the spot to see.
