What is a passport comparison?
A passport comparison puts two or three passports side by side, so you see which one gets you into more countries without a visa, and where only one of them does.
It's how dual citizens pick which passport to travel on, and how anyone weighing a second citizenship sees what it would change.

Example: US and Mexican passports
Many people hold both. On September 26, 2026, the US passport entered 148 countries without a visa arranged first, and the Mexican one 130. They share 124 of them.
Only the US passport enters these 23 without a visa in advance: Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Canada, Cape Verde, Eswatini, Gambia, Guyana, Kuwait, Lesotho, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Oman, Saudi Arabia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Syria, Taiwan, Tonga, Türkiye and Ukraine.
Only the Mexican passport enters these 6: Belarus, Brazil, China, Iran, Papua New Guinea and Venezuela.
Together, the 2 passports enter 153 countries without a visa in advance.
Tax sets them apart too. Mexico taxes by where you live, with an exception for a time after a move to a tax haven. The US taxes its citizens wherever they live.
Example: UK and Irish passports
The travel numbers are close: 151 countries for the UK passport and 153 for the Irish one, with 147 shared.
Only the UK passport enters Mozambique, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam without a visa in advance. Only the Irish one enters Burkina Faso, Honduras, Iraq, Tajikistan and Uganda.
The big difference is where you can live. An Irish passport gives the right to live and work in 31 more countries: the other 26 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the UK. Since Brexit, a UK passport gives that right in one: Ireland, through the Common Travel Area.

Dual citizens pick a passport for each trip. 3 habits keep it simple:
- Enter and leave your own country on its passport: the US, for one, requires it of its citizens
- Show the airline the passport that lets you into your destination
- Enter and leave each country on the same passport, so your stay adds up
In Europe, the 90 days in any 180 count you, not your passport, so switching passports doesn't start a new 90. Count them on the Schengen calculator.

Where the data comes from
The visa rules come from Wikipedia's "Visa requirements for … citizens" articles, one per passport, read every week. Dual citizenship and years to citizenship come from Wikipedia's naturalization table, and tax on citizens abroad from its international taxation table.
Where a passport lets you live and work comes from the agreements themselves: free movement in the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, the Common Travel Area, the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Mercosur Residence Agreement, the treaty between India and Nepal, and the Compacts of Free Association with the US.
