Here's what a digital nomad visa is, what countries ask, which ones don't tax your foreign income, and how to choose.
What is a digital nomad visa?
A digital nomad visa is a permit to live in a country while you keep working for employers or clients abroad.
A tourist stay is usually capped at 90 days, and in the Schengen Area at 90 days in any 180, which the Schengen calculator counts for you. A nomad visa gives you 6 months to 2 years or more, with a residence permit or card in many countries.
In return, most ask for proof of remote work, a minimum income, health insurance and a clean criminal record. Most also bar you from working for local companies.
The lowest income bars
Here are the 10 lowest monthly income requirements among the programs with a fixed amount, on September 27, 2026:

Costa Rica, Panama and Kazakhstan also ask US$3,000 a month. Ecuador's bar is 3 of its unified basic salaries, US$482 each in 2026.
At the top end, Belize asks US$75,000 a year for one person, Montserrat US$70,000, and Thailand's Long-Term Resident visa for remote workers US$80,000.
Some programs have no fixed amount. Romania asks 3 times its average gross salary, Albania and Montenegro enough to live on, and Thailand's Destination Thailand Visa asks for 500,000 baht in savings instead of an income.
Where your foreign income isn't taxed
8 programs state that you won't pay income tax there on what you earn abroad:

No tax there doesn't mean no tax anywhere. Your home country may still tax you, and most countries count you as a tax resident after 183 days. Keep track with the 183-day rule calculator.
Family, length and what comes next
29 of the 53 programs let a spouse or children join you, usually on their own permits. Namibia asks US$1,000 more a month for a spouse, and Sri Lanka US$500 more for each dependant beyond 2.
Most programs last a year. Croatia's runs 18 months, Colombia's and Ecuador's 2 years, and Thailand's Long-Term Resident visa 5 years, renewable for 5 more.
Few nomad visas lead to permanent residence. Albania's permit for digital mobile workers renews up to 5 times in a row, with permanent residence possible after 5 years, and Germany's freelance permit can lead to settlement after 5 years.
Closed and coming
Programs end, so the finder keeps the closed ones with their dates:
- Bermuda's Work from Bermuda certificate ended on February 28, 2025
- Iceland's long-term visa for remote work ended when its new Visa Act took effect in May 2026
- The Philippines and Peru have announced digital nomad visas that aren't open yet

Choosing a base
A nomad visa settles where you can stay. Where you pay tax, where your company is registered and which passport you travel on are separate choices.

Where the data comes from
Every program's facts come from its government's own page: the immigration office, the ministry, the consulate, or the program's official site. Each program lists those pages, with the date they were read.
Agent and law firm sites help find the official page, and are never the source. When a government page doesn't state a figure, the program shows no amount rather than a guess.
Amounts in your currency use the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, the official pegs of currencies like the UAE dirham and the Eastern Caribbean dollar, and Colombia's official peso rate, so they're close, not exact.
Rules change often, so check the official page before you apply. It's information, not legal, tax or immigration advice.
