What is a background noise remover?
A background noise remover splits a recording into two tracks: the voice, and everything around it. Keep the voice alone, or leave a little of the room in so it sounds natural.
This one runs an AI model on your own device, so your recording never leaves it.
How it works
The model hears up to 20 seconds at a time and writes out the voice it hears. The background is what's left: the file less the voice.
So the two sliders add back up to the original exactly. Background at 0% removes it, and 100% is the file as it was.
How well it works
I tested it on 10 real recordings from Microsoft's noise research: headsets, speakerphones and webcams, in cafes, offices and hallways.
DNSMOS, Microsoft's quality score for speech with noise, rates each from 1 to 5. The background went from 2.61 to 4.00, and the overall quality from 2.27 to 2.99.
On a clip of my AI Creator Summit 2026 talk with a crowded restaurant under it, the background went from 1.51 to 4.12. Try it with the example above.
- Play it before you save – listen where the noise was loudest, where a trace is most likely.
- Leave a little room – 10 to 20% of the background can sound more natural than none.
- Pick Best quality on a computer – the fast model is for phones, and takes out less.
How it compares with Adobe and Riverside
I ran the same 20-second clip through Adobe's Enhance Speech and Riverside's Magic Audio, and scored every version the same way, at the same loudness. You can play each one in the example above.

Riverside's came out best, about as good as the clip before I added the restaurant. Mine took out nearly as much background as Riverside's, more than Adobe's, and tied Adobe overall.
On the 10 recordings from Microsoft, mine scored 2.99 overall against Adobe's 3.08, and removed more background, 4.00 against 3.91. I didn't run Riverside on those.
Both of theirs need an account, and your file is uploaded to them. Adobe's free plan takes audio only, and Riverside's runs in its editor, where the result is exported.
How fast it is
On a MacBook Pro with an M1 Max, the 20-second example took 19 seconds the first time, with the 141 MB download, and 2 seconds after that, on the graphics card.
Without a graphics card, it runs on the processor, about 1.4 times faster than the recording plays. The fast model is 34 MB and much quicker, for phones and older computers.
Remove background noise from video
A video saves with its picture copied as it is, not re-encoded, and the new sound. An audio file saves as MP3, WAV or M4A.
The voice and the background also save on their own, as WAV files, to mix in your own editor.
- Expecting it to remove echo – it takes out noise, and a voice in a big bare room can still sound like it's in one.
- Turning the voice up too far – past 100%, its loudest words are held down so they don't clip, which can flatten them.
- Files over 60 minutes – trim them first, or do them in parts.
After you remove the noise
Even out the loudness with the audio enhancer, cut the ums with the filler word remover, or add captions with the video caption generator.
