This free standard deviation calculator finds the standard deviation of your numbers, for a sample or a population, and shows the working value by value.

It gives the variance and the mean too, and draws your numbers on a box plot.

I built it because the formula looks scarier than it is. Seeing each value's distance from the mean, squared, makes it click.

Here's the formula in plain steps, a worked example, and when to use each version.

Key takeaways

The standard deviation is the typical distance of your values from their mean.
Square each value's distance from the mean, add them up, divide, and take the square root.
For a sample, divide by N − 1; for a population, divide by N.
The variance is the standard deviation squared, before the square root.
For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9, the population standard deviation is exactly 2.

What is a standard deviation calculator?

A standard deviation calculator measures how spread out a list of numbers is.

A small standard deviation means the values sit close to the mean. A large one means they're scattered.

How to calculate standard deviation

Here's the formula as the NIST handbook gives it, in steps:

Calculate the standard deviation0/6

The calculator does each step and shows them in a table you can download.

Sample or population?

Use the sample standard deviation when your numbers are part of a bigger group, like 50 customers out of thousands. Dividing by N − 1 corrects for the sample being small.

Use the population standard deviation only when you have every value, like every student in one class.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9, as a population.

The mean is 40 ÷ 8 = 5. The squared distances from 5 add up to 32.

Divided by 8, the variance is 4, and its square root is 2. As a sample, dividing by 7 instead, it's 2.14.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the ways the answer comes out wrong.

  • Dividing by N for a sample, which understates the spread
  • Forgetting to square the differences, so the positives and negatives cancel out
  • Forgetting the square root, which leaves the variance
  • Comparing standard deviations of data in different units

Who is the standard deviation calculator for?

It's for students, researchers and analysts, and these tools help around it.

Know the spread, and the mean means more.

Standard Deviation Calculator FAQs

Questions about the standard deviation calculator? Here's what to know.

A standard deviation calculator measures how spread out a list of numbers is around its mean.

This free one shows the working value by value.

Square each value's distance from the mean, add them, divide by N − 1 for a sample or N for a population, and take the square root.

The sample version divides by N − 1 and the population version by N.

Use the sample one when your numbers are part of a bigger group.

The variance is the standard deviation squared, the step before the square root.

It means your values are spread far from the mean.

A low one means they sit close to it.

No, it's a square root of squared distances, so it's 0 or more.

It's 2 for the population and 2.14 for a sample.

A sample's values sit closer to their own mean than to the population's, so N − 1 corrects the spread upward.

Yes, it's free with no sign-up.

It runs in your browser, and your numbers stay on your device.
