What is an MP3 to WAV converter?
An MP3 to WAV converter decodes an MP3 into a WAV file, which stores every sample with no compression.
The sound stays exactly what the MP3 holds. Converting to WAV doesn't bring back what MP3 compression took out, but it gives editors and upload forms the format they ask for.
When you need WAV
WAV is the format for work on the sound itself:
- Editing – some editors and older software open WAV and not MP3, and editing a WAV doesn't compress it again on every save.
- Uploading to Apple – Apple Podcasts Connect takes WAV, FLAC or MP3, by Apple's audio requirements.
- Radio and broadcast – stations often ask for WAV.
- Sample and sound libraries – WAV opens everywhere.
16-bit or 24-bit?
An MP3 holds less detail than either, so 16-bit keeps all of it. Pick 24-bit when your editor or the station asks for it, or when you'll process the sound a lot.
Apple asks for 16 or 24 bit at 44.1 kHz at least for WAV uploads, and recommends 24-bit.

WAV keeps every sample, so it's big:

Even out the loudness
Tick "Even out the loudness" and the converter measures your audio first, then brings it to the level podcasts use: -16 LUFS for stereo, as Apple asks.
It measures to ITU-R BS.1770, the standard behind Apple's LKFS. On the example, it reads -23.4 LUFS, the same as FFmpeg's own loudness meter.
A mono file goes to -19 LUFS instead. Players put mono on both speakers, where it sounds 3 dB louder than it measures.
So -19 in mono sounds like -16 in stereo. That's the rule Auphonic and Google's loudness guidelines use.
A limiter keeps every peak under -1 dB, Apple's true peak ceiling. It looks 5 milliseconds ahead, so it lowers a peak smoothly instead of clipping it.
Nothing is uploaded
Most online converters send your file to their server and send back the result. This one converts in your browser, so your file never leaves your computer.
That's why there's no size limit but your computer's memory, and why a long recording works too.

Edit the WAV, then convert your finished edit back to MP3 with the WAV to MP3 converter at Apple's bit rates.
