What is a text-based audio editor?
A text-based audio editor shows a recording as its transcript, and every change to the text changes the audio. Cutting a sentence is selecting it and pressing Delete.
It's faster than a waveform for talk: podcasts, interviews, lessons and voice notes.
Edit by selecting words
Click a word to select it and to move the player there. Shift-click another to select everything between, then Cut, or Keep to bring back what was cut.
The player skips every cut, so you hear the edit as you make it. Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z undoes.
Clean up in one click
Three switches clean up what people usually cut: long pauses, the sounds between words, and words said twice in a row.
How it finds um and uh
Whisper, the speech recognition model under this tool, writes clean text: it leaves most ums and uhs out. On the example, Whisper wrote none of the four fillers that YouTube's own captions show, on your device or on our server.
So the tool listens between the words Whisper did write. A gap with sound in it as loud as speech is almost always a filler, a false start or a "you know".
On the example, it cut four of the five ums and uhs and no words. We checked the edit against a transcript made to keep fillers: only a "but, uh, but" was left.
Listen before you cut
Each sound is marked where it is in the transcript, with its length. Press the speaker to hear it with half a second around it, and click the length to cut it or keep it.
A sound over 1 second is marked in amber. In our test on a clip cut off mid-sentence, one of those was words Whisper had missed, so hear it before you keep the cut.
Save it
Save the edit as MP3, WAV or M4A, and even out the loudness to -16 LUFS, the level Apple Podcasts asks for. Every cut fades over 8 milliseconds, so no click is heard.
The edited transcript downloads too, as text or as subtitles with the new times.
After you edit
Make a clip of it with the audiogram generator, or take out just the fillers with the filler word remover.
