The country
Every country, by the stricter advice
This free travel advisory map shows what 2 governments say about travel to every country, updated every day.
Pick a country to read the US State Department's level and the UK Foreign Office's warnings side by side, each in its own words, with its date and a link. The map colors every country by the stricter of the 2.
Here's what the levels mean, why 2 governments beat 1, and how to read a warning for part of a country.
What is a travel advisory?
A travel advisory is a government's official advice to its citizens about the risks of traveling to a country.
The US uses 4 levels. The UK says which areas it advises against visiting, if any.
| Level | The US says | Our map band |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exercise Normal Precautions | Normal |
| 2 | Exercise Increased Caution | Caution |
| 3 | Reconsider Travel | Reconsider |
| 4 | Do Not Travel | Do not travel |
The map adds the UK's warnings to these bands, and each country shows the stricter of the 2.
How the US system works
The US State Department gives every country 1 of the 4 levels above, with a summary of the risks behind it.
A country can get 1 level, with a stricter one for some areas. Georgia is at Level 1, and the US says not to travel to its Russian-occupied regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
How the UK system works
The UK doesn't use levels. It says whether it advises against all travel, or all but essential travel, to the whole country or to parts of it.
That makes it precise. For Venezuela, the UK lists the areas it advises against by name: the Orinoco Mining Arc in Bolívar state, municipality by municipality, and areas near the borders with Colombia, Brazil and Guyana.
The UK also warns about insurance, in its own words: "Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)."
When the 2 disagree
The 2 governments often agree on the risk and say it differently. For Georgia, both warn against South Ossetia and Abkhazia: the US inside a Level 1 advisory, the UK as a warning for parts of the country.
Sometimes they really do disagree. On September 26, 2026:
| Country | The US | The UK |
|---|---|---|
| Level 3, Reconsider Travel | Advises against all travel to parts | |
| Level 3, Reconsider Travel | No warning against travel | |
| Level 1, with 2 regions at Do Not Travel | Advises against all travel to 2 regions |
The map uses the stricter of the 2, so a country only shows as normal when both agree it is.
Advice for popular nomad countries
Here's what both governments said about 12 countries digital nomads love, on September 26, 2026:
| Country | The US | The UK | Map band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | No warning | Normal | |
| Level 1 | No warning | Normal | |
| Level 1 | No warning | Normal | |
| Level 1 | All but essential travel to parts | Caution | |
| Level 1 | All but essential travel to parts | Caution | |
| Level 1 | All travel to parts | Caution | |
| Level 2 | No warning | Caution | |
| Level 2 | No warning | Caution | |
| Level 2 | All but essential travel to parts | Caution | |
| Level 2 | All but essential travel to parts | Caution | |
| Level 2 | All travel to parts | Caution | |
| Level 3 | All but essential travel to parts | Reconsider |
Most of them show as Caution. That usually means 1 area or 1 kind of risk, not the whole country, so read the card before you rule a place out.
I've lived in 9 of these 12 countries, all but Japan, Georgia and Brazil. See where I've lived, and track your own on the countries visited map.
How to use the travel advisory map
The map reads both governments every day, and the date each one last changed its advice shows on the card.
Before you travel
The level is only the start. Before you book, work through this checklist:
Then check how long you can stay on the visa-free countries map, and your Europe days on the Schengen calculator.
Off the beaten path
Some of the best places are in countries with a high level.
I lived in Caracas and Valencia, and Canaima, home of Angel Falls, is easily my favorite place I've ever visited. See it with my favorite places.
Places like that need more planning, not less. Read both governments' advice for the exact area you'll be in, go with people who know it, and keep your plans with someone at home.
Travel expands your mind before it expands your business.
Who is the travel advisory map for?
It's for travelers, digital nomads and founders planning trips, and anyone going somewhere off the beaten path.
The advice is each government's, word for word. We don't rate countries ourselves, and the links always go to the official page.
I've lived in 19 countries, some of them off the beaten path. My story is in what is a global citizen. More tools are on the free travel tools page.
