An AI image generator turns a few words into a picture, so you can have a blog header or a social image without a photo shoot or a stock site.

This free AI image generator makes one image in about 15 seconds, at the right size for where it's going, from a blog header to a Pinterest pin.

You pick a shape and a style, download it as a JPG or PNG, and make another version if the first isn't right.

So here's how to describe an image so it comes out the way you pictured it, and what I use these images for.

Key takeaways

Describe the subject, the setting, the light and the style, in that order.
Pick the shape for where the image goes, since cropping later cuts off part of it.
Add "no text" to your description, then put words on the image afterwards.
Make a few versions of the same description and keep the best one.

What is an AI image generator?

An AI image generator is a tool that makes a new image from a written description.

This one gives you three choices before it starts:

  • Your description – what's in the image, in plain words.
  • The shape – six sizes, named for where the image goes.
  • The style – photo, illustration, 3D, watercolor, cinematic or minimal, or no style at all.

Every image comes out at full size, and nothing is kept on my side, so download the ones you want.

How to describe your image

The more you say, the less the generator has to guess.

I write my descriptions in this order:

  1. The subject – what the image is of, like "a laptop on a wooden desk".
  2. The setting – where it is, like "by a window in a quiet room".
  3. The light – morning light, golden hour, soft studio light.
  4. The mood – calm, busy, warm, cool.
  5. What to leave out – "no text" is the one I use most.

So "a laptop" becomes "a laptop on a wooden desk by a window, morning light, calm, no text".

That second one gives you a usable blog header nearly every time.

Which shape to pick

Each shape is the size that fits its place, so you don't lose part of the image to cropping:

If you need an exact pixel size after that, the image resizer changes it without stretching.

Which style to pick

The style is a few words added to your description, so you can skip it and write your own instead.

Photo works best for places, things and food, while illustration works best for ideas that are hard to photograph, like "growth" or "a plan".

For a blog, I keep one style across all my posts, so the images look like they belong together.

What it does well, and what it doesn't

It's great at places, objects, light and mood, which is most of what a blog or a post needs.

It's weaker at a few things:

  • Words inside the image – letters often come out wrong, so add text afterwards with the post image generator.
  • Real people and brands – it won't get a real face or a logo right, and you shouldn't publish one that looks like it did.
  • Exact counts and small details – "three cups" might give you four.

When an image is close but not right, I press "Another version" before I change the description, since a new version often fixes it.

Can I use the images?

Yes. The model behind this generator is open source under the Apache 2.0 license, which allows commercial use, and I use these images on my own sites.

Before you publish one, check it for anything that looks like a real person, a logo or someone else's work.

How to use the AI image generator

It takes about a minute:

  1. Describe your image. Or press one of the examples to see it work.
  2. Pick where it's going. The shape sets the size.
  3. Pick a style. Or leave it at no style.
  4. Make the image. It takes about 15 seconds.
  5. Download it. As a JPG for the web or a PNG to edit, or make another version.

Each person can make 10 images an hour, free.

Who is the AI image generator for?

It's for anyone who needs an image and doesn't have one:

And if you post every day, keep the descriptions that worked in a note, so your images stay in one style.
