Key takeaways
What is a tone changer?
A tone changer is a tool that rewrites text so it sounds different while saying the same thing.
Tone lives in small choices. Saying "sorry" changes it, and so does "we're unable to" in place of "we can't".
How to use the tone changer
It takes a few seconds:
A real example: a blunt refund email
Here's the email from the Try button:
We can't refund your order. The return window closed 10 days ago and our policy is clear about that. If you need help with something else, let us know.
It's correct, and it's cold. Here's one version from each of three tones:
- One of its versions
- Sorry, we can’t issue a refund for your order, the return window closed 10 days ago, and that’s what our policy says. If there’s anything else you need help with, just let us know.
- Reading grade
- 7
- One of its versions
- We understand your request, but the return period ended ten days ago, as outlined in our policy. Should you have any other concerns, please feel free to reach out.
- Reading grade
- 7.6
- One of its versions
- We are unable to process a refund for your order, as the return period ended ten days ago and our policy explicitly states this. Should you require assistance with any other matter, please inform us.
- Reading grade
- 10.5
Every version kept the 10 days and the policy. The diplomatic one never says "refund" at all: it lets the dates explain.
The professional one reads at grade 10.5, up from 4 for the original. Formal words cost some readability, so use that tone where it's expected.
The screenshot below marks two things:
- The friendly version: the blunt refund email in a warmer tone, with every fact kept.
- Reads human: a score of 100, with no AI tells found in the new version.
All 23 tones, and when to use each

When in doubt, write it the way you'd say it to that person face to face. The conversational tone does exactly that.
Tone changer or paraphrasing tool?
A tone changer keeps your meaning and changes how it sounds. A paraphrasing tool keeps the tone and changes the words.
To make a draft read less like AI, the AI humanizer goes after the patterns that give it away.
Who is the tone changer for?
It's for anyone who writes to more than one kind of reader:
- Paraphrasing tool – anyone who wants new words in the same tone
- Email subject line generator – anyone sending the email they just rewrote
- Grammar checker – anyone who wants the new version checked for mistakes
- AI humanizer – anyone whose text reads like an AI wrote it
And if a message took you three drafts to stop sounding angry, this gets you there in one.
