Key takeaways
What is a text simplifier?
A text simplifier is a tool that rewrites hard text in plain language, with everyday words and shorter sentences.
It keeps what the text says. Only the way it says it changes.
How to use the text simplifier
It takes a few seconds:
A real example: SEO in jargon
Here's the paragraph from the Try button:
Search engine optimization encompasses a multifaceted array of methodologies designed to enhance the visibility of digital content within organic search results.
Practitioners utilize keyword research, technical site audits and authoritative backlink acquisition in order to augment rankings, thereby facilitating increased referral traffic and, consequently, improved conversion outcomes for the organization.
It reads at grade 23, past any school year. For comparison, the 122 blog posts I measured read at grade 7.6, with a middle sentence of 13 words.

- The plain version
- Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a set of ways to help a website show up higher in free search results. People who do SEO look for the right words to use, check the site’s technical setup, and get other sites to link to theirs. These actions make the site rank better, bring more visitors, and help the business get more sales.

- SEO means using different tricks to make a website appear near the top of natural search listings. SEO workers find popular keywords, examine the site’s technical health, and earn trustworthy links from other sites. Doing this improves the site’s rank, brings more traffic, and leads to better results for the company.

- The plain version
- Search engine optimization is a group of methods that boost how often a website appears in unpaid search results. SEO experts study which words people search for, run technical checks on the site, and collect strong backlinks. These steps raise the site’s ranking, draw more visitors, and help the organization get more conversions.
The first is the one I'd use. It names SEO once, then says plainly what the work is and what it brings.
The second calls the methods "tricks", a word the original never uses. That's why the tool gives you three: read them against your text and keep the one that's still true.
The screenshot below marks two things:
- A plain version: the SEO paragraph, rewritten in everyday words.
- The reading grade: 7.7 for this version, next to 7.6 for the real blog posts I measured.
The jargon it swapped
These are the swaps the first version made, and they work in your own writing too:
| Dense | Plain |
|---|---|
| encompasses a multifaceted array of methodologies | is a set of ways |
| enhance the visibility of digital content | help a website show up higher |
| authoritative backlink acquisition | get other sites to link to theirs |
| augment rankings | make the site rank better |
Most jargon is a long way to say something short. Saying the short thing is the whole job.
What reading level should your text be?
It depends on where it's going. These are the middle reading grades of the real writing I measured:
- Posts measured
- 122
- Reading grade

- Reading grade
- 8.2

Pick what you're writing under "It's a", and each version shows its numbers next to that kind's.
Text simplifier or text summarizer?
A text simplifier keeps everything and makes it easier. A text summarizer keeps only the main points.
To shorten a hard text, simplify it first, then summarize the plain version. For one sentence at a time, the sentence simplifier keeps your order.
Who is the text simplifier for?
It's for anyone who writes for readers outside their field:
- Readability checker – anyone checking how hard a draft reads
- Text summarizer – anyone who needs the main points only
- Sentence simplifier – anyone fixing one sentence at a time
- AI humanizer – anyone whose plain version still reads like AI
And if you explain your work to clients, a plain version saves the follow-up questions.
