This free credit card payoff calculator shows how many months it takes to pay off a card and how much interest you'll pay, or the monthly payment that clears it by a date.

Type your balance, your APR and a payment, and it draws the balance falling month by month, with what paying a little more saves.

I built it because a card's interest is easy to ignore until you see it as months of your life and a dollar figure.

Key takeaways

The average APR on cards charging interest was 22.15% in May 2026, according to the Federal Reserve.
Each month's interest is about your APR divided by 12, times what you owe.
A payment that only covers the interest never brings the balance down.
On most cards, paying the full balance by the due date means no interest on purchases, the CFPB says.

What is a credit card payoff calculator?

A credit card payoff calculator works out how long a balance takes to pay off at a monthly payment, and the interest you'll pay on the way.

This one also finds the payment that clears it in a set number of months, and shows what paying more saves.

How it works

The calculator works it out on your device, and your numbers stay there.

How card interest works

The CFPB says a card's interest rate is the price you pay for borrowing, stated as a yearly rate, the APR.

Some issuers charge a daily periodic rate, the APR divided by 360 or 365, compounding each day. The calculator uses the APR divided by 12 a month, so a daily-rate card comes out slightly higher.

The Federal Reserve's G.19 put the average at 22.15% in May 2026 for accounts charged interest.

Pay more, pay less

Every extra dollar goes straight off the balance, so it stops costing you interest from the next month.

That's why $50 more a month cuts both the months and the interest, as the example below shows.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: a $5,000 balance at 22.15% APR, paid at $200 a month.

It takes 34 months and costs $1,767.76 in interest, $6,767.76 in all.

Pay $250 instead, and it's gone in 26 months with $1,297.68 of interest: $470.08 and 8 months saved. To clear it in 24 months, you'd pay $259.76 a month.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that come up most.

  • Paying only the minimum, which stretches a balance out for years
  • Adding new purchases while you pay it down
  • Forgetting that a promotional rate ends and the APR rises
  • Moving the balance without counting the transfer fee

Who is the credit card payoff calculator for?

It's for anyone carrying a card balance, and these tools help around it.
