This Canggu guide for digital nomads shows you what living and working there is really like.

I lived in Canggu, and in Seminyak just down the coast.

It's the busiest digital nomad hub in Bali: surf beaches, rice fields, coworking spaces, gyms and cafés full of laptops.

But it's no longer the quiet village it was, with traffic jams on the narrow roads and villas on Airbnb that cost more than many nomads expect.

In this guide, I'll show you:

  • What Canggu is like for digital nomads, and what other nomads say about it
  • The best areas, and what a month really costs
  • Where digital nomads work, and how fast the internet is
  • How safe it is, and how to get around
  • Things to do, day trips like Ubud and Uluwatu, and Indonesia's visas

Here's everything you need to know before you go.

Key takeaways

A furnished month on Airbnb had a median of $1,678 in Pererenan and $3,106 in Berawa for November 2026, as many listings are villas.
My finders list seven coworking spaces and 104 free Wi-Fi spots, but the typical line tests only about 15 Mbps.
I felt very safe in Canggu, and the US rates Indonesia Level 2, the same level as France, Germany and the UK.
Indonesia's E33G remote worker visa lasts one year, for people earning at least $60,000 a year from a company abroad.
The dry season runs from April to October, and December to March is the wet season.

What is Canggu like for digital nomads?

Canggu is a coastal area on Bali's southwest coast, in Indonesia, about an hour from the airport in traffic.

It grew from a few villages among rice fields into Bali's surf and nomad hub, and today it runs along the coast from Berawa to Pererenan.

For digital nomads, it has the biggest remote work community in Bali, with coworking spaces, gyms, yoga studios and cafés everywhere.

Most nomads rent a villa or a room with a pool, get a scooter, and work from a coworking space or a café a few minutes away.

And here are Canggu's numbers at a glance:

What other digital nomads say about Canggu

I read the digital nomad guides that rank for Canggu and the threads where nomads, and people who live there, answer questions.

Here's what they like:

  • The community – it's easy to meet other nomads at coworking spaces, gyms and events.
  • The lifestyle – surf in the morning, work in a café, and watch the sunset on the beach.
  • The cafés and food – healthy cafés, warungs with local food and restaurants from every cuisine.
  • The wellness scene – yoga, gyms, ice baths and saunas on almost every street.
  • English – most people speak at least some English.

And here's what they complain about:

  • The traffic – the narrow roads, and the "shortcut" between areas, jam up at busy hours.
  • Overdevelopment – construction, crowds and shops have replaced much of the old village feel.
  • Western prices – the trendy cafés and villas cost much more than the rest of Bali.
  • Scooter accidents – many visitors ride without a license or experience, and crashes are common.
  • Bali belly – stomach bugs are common, so locals advise drinking only bottled or filtered water.

The most common advice is to pick an area you can work from without crossing Canggu in traffic every day.

Best areas in Canggu for digital nomads

Canggu is a string of areas along the coast, and each has its own feel:

  • Pererenan – the quieter, newer area to the northwest, with rice fields, trendy cafés and the calmest roads.
  • Batu Bolong – the busy heart of Canggu, by the surf beach, with cafés, bars and shops.
  • Echo Beach – the surf and sunset spot between Batu Bolong and Pererenan, with beach bars and restaurants.
  • Berawa – the area to the southeast, with beach clubs, gyms and bigger villas, and the highest prices of the four.

Here's what a furnished month cost on Airbnb when I checked:

That's Airbnb's search for a whole home for November 2026, for one guest.

It covers 23 or 24 listings in each area, read on October 1, 2026, with each price the total for the month in dollars.

Neighboring areas share some listings, as Airbnb's map for each area reaches into the next.

Many of these listings are whole villas with a pool, so a room in a shared villa or a guesthouse, found locally, costs far less.

Cost of living in Canggu for digital nomads

A digital nomad spends about $2,000 a month in Canggu with a furnished place from Airbnb, and much less with a room or a longer rental found locally.

Here's how that breaks down for one person:

WhatA month
A furnished studio or one-bedroom$1,572
Groceries$216
Eating out$59
Utilities and phone$43
Public transport$29
Leisure$81
Total$2,000

The rent is the cheapest quarter of the 80 different Airbnb listings I checked across the four areas.

The rest is what a one-person US household spends, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2024 survey, at Indonesia's prices from the World Bank.

Coworking, a scooter, insurance and flights come on top, and eating at the trendy cafés costs far more than the model's local prices.

Where digital nomads work in Canggu

Canggu has some of the best coworking spaces in Asia, many with pools, gyms and events.

My coworking finder lists seven coworking spaces, including Tropical Nomad, Outpost Canggu, BWork Bali, DEOS Coworking and Camp 308.

My free Wi-Fi finder has 104 spots, from cafés to beach clubs, where you can work for the price of a coffee.

Home internet is slow and drops in storms and power cuts, so coworking spaces, with fiber and backup power, are the safe choice for calls.

See them all on a map, with hours, photos and directions, in the coworking space finder and the free Wi-Fi spots finder.

Canggu's digital nomad community

Canggu has one of the biggest digital nomad communities in the world, so you'll meet people from your first week.

Coworking spaces host talks, mixers and workshops, and gyms, surf schools and yoga studios are where many friendships start.

Internet in Canggu

In M-Lab's open speed tests within 25 km of Canggu, half came in above 15 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload, and the fastest quarter of lines above 40 Mbps.

That's 177,865 download tests from September 2025 to September 2026.

The typical figure counts every line, cheap and mobile ones too; a fiber line in a good apartment or coworking space is closer to the fastest quarter.

Test yours when you get there with my internet speed test.

Is Canggu safe for digital nomads?

I felt very safe in Canggu.

The US State Department rates Indonesia Level 2 in its advisory of July 7, 2026, the same level it gives France, Germany and the UK.

Levels 1 and 2 are both everyday travel, and the US only asks you to reconsider a trip at Level 3.

It names the risk of natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions, demonstrations that can turn violent, and terrorism.

Its only Do Not Travel areas are the provinces of Central Papua and Highland Papua, far from Bali.

Nomads who've lived in Canggu say the biggest daily risks are the roads and petty theft, like bag snatching from scooters, so ride carefully and keep your phone out of reach at night.

I find that as long as you don't do anything stupid, you'll be safe in most places, but you should take precautions anywhere.

Read the full advisory before you book, as it changes.

Getting around Canggu

Most nomads get around Canggu by scooter:

  • Scooters – rented by the month, the fastest way through traffic, but you need an international permit with a motorcycle license, and a helmet.
  • Ride apps – Grab and Gojek for cheap scooter and car rides and food delivery.
  • Walking – fine within one area, but the roads have few sidewalks and lots of traffic.
  • Drivers – a car with a driver for day trips, booked through your host or an app.
  • The airport – Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is about 20 km (12 miles) southeast, about an hour in traffic.

Things to do in Canggu

Here are the things people who live in Canggu show visitors first:

  • Surfing – beginner waves at Batu Bolong and Berawa, and stronger ones at Echo Beach.
  • Sunsets on the beach – the evening ritual, with beanbags and drinks along the sand.
  • Tanah Lot – the Hindu sea temple on a rock, about 30 minutes northwest, best at sunset.
  • Rice field walks – the paddies between the areas, best early in the morning.
  • Beach clubs – pools, music and sunsets at the big clubs in Berawa and along the coast.
  • Yoga and wellness – classes, saunas and ice baths all over Canggu.

Day trips from Canggu

The best-known day trip is Ubud, Bali's cultural heart, and the whole island is within a few hours.

Ubud

Ubud is a town in the hills of central Bali, about an hour from Canggu, known for its temples, rice terraces and craft villages.

Go for the Tegallalang rice terraces, the Sacred Monkey Forest and the Campuhan Ridge walk.

More day trips

Each of these makes a good change from Canggu:

  • Uluwatu – cliffs, surf breaks and the clifftop temple on the Bukit Peninsula, about an hour south.
  • Nusa Penida – the island of cliffs and coves, by fast boat from Sanur, best as an overnight trip.
  • Mount Batur – a sunrise hike up an active volcano, leaving in the middle of the night.
  • Seminyak – beach clubs, shopping and restaurants, about 20 minutes south.
  • The Gili Islands and Lombok – car-free islands and quieter beaches, by fast boat, for a long weekend.

Visas for digital nomads in Indonesia

Indonesia has a remote worker visa, and most nomads start with a visa on arrival.

Here are the main options:

  • Visa on arrival – 30 days for many passports, including the US, the UK, Australia and most of Europe, extendable once for 30 more.
  • E33G remote worker visa – one year, for people employed by a company outside Indonesia who earn at least $60,000 a year.

Bali also charges foreign visitors a tourist levy of IDR 150,000, paid online or on arrival.

I checked these facts on September 27, 2026.

Time zone and working hours in Canggu

Bali is on Central Indonesia Time, UTC+8, all year, the same as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

That's seven hours ahead of London in the northern summer and eight in winter, so your afternoon is Europe's morning.

US hours are harder: New York is 12 or 13 hours behind, so calls land early in the morning or late at night.

Australia is close, with Sydney two or three hours ahead, depending on the season.

See how many working hours you'd share with your team in my time zone overlap calculator.

Air quality in Canggu

By an estimate, the air in Canggu carries about 11 µg/m³ of fine particles (PM2.5) over a year, 2.3 times the WHO's guideline of 5 µg/m³.

The cleanest month is December, at about 9 µg/m³, and the haziest is November.

No open air quality station is within 25 km of Canggu, so these are estimates from Copernicus's CAMS air model for the surrounding area (an 80 km grid, 2023 to 2025, CC BY 4.0), adjusted to what stations measure elsewhere.

Take them as a guide: the model can be well off in big cities, and a measured figure replaces it once a station opens.
