Kuta, Lombok Guide for Digital Nomads
Everything a digital nomad needs to live and work in Kuta, Lombok: the areas, a month's real costs, where to work, the internet, safety and the visa.

Navid lived hereThis Kuta, Lombok guide for digital nomads shows you what living and working there is really like.
I lived in Lombok, in Kuta and at Selong Belanak, and the photos below are from my stay in March 2022.
It's a small surf town on Lombok's south coast, with empty bays, green hills and a pace that reminds many people of Bali decades ago.
But the internet is slow, you need a scooter to get anywhere, and there's far less to do than in Bali.
In this guide, I'll show you:
- What Kuta, Lombok is like for digital nomads, and what other nomads say about it
- The best areas, and what a month really costs
- Where digital nomads work, and how fast the internet is
- How safe it is, and how to get around
- Things to do, day trips like the Gili Islands and Mount Rinjani, and Indonesia's visas
Here's everything you need to know before you go.
Key takeaways
What is Kuta, Lombok like for digital nomads?
Kuta is a small town on the south coast of Lombok, the island east of Bali in Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara province.
It grew from a fishing village into a surf town, and the new Mandalika resort area around it now includes a racetrack that hosts MotoGP.
For digital nomads, it's a quieter, cheaper alternative to Bali, with world-class surf, a few coworking cafés and a small, friendly community.
Most nomads stay in or near Kuta, or in a villa above one of the bays, and ride a scooter to the beaches and cafés.
These are two sunsets and an afternoon at Selong Belanak, the bay west of Kuta, from my stay, in March 2022:

What other digital nomads say about Kuta, Lombok
I read the digital nomad guides that rank for Lombok and the threads where nomads, and people who live there, answer questions.
Here's what they like:
- The surf – waves for every level, from Selong Belanak for beginners to the breaks of Gerupuk.
- The quiet – far fewer people and much less traffic than Bali.
- The beaches – wide, empty bays like Tanjung Aan and Mawun, a short ride from town.
- The lifestyle – easy to stay fit, eat well and be outside every day.
- The locals – friendly and welcoming.
And here's what they complain about:
- The internet – slow and patchy in many places, so video calls depend on where you stay.
- Getting around – there's almost no public transport, so you need a scooter.
- Less to do – outside surfing and beaches, there's little going on compared to Bali.
- Power cuts – they happen now and then, so keep a battery pack charged.
- The morning call to prayer – Lombok is mostly Muslim, and mosques are loud before sunrise.
The most common advice is to ask your host for a speed test before you book, and to come for the surf.
Best areas in Kuta, Lombok for digital nomads
Each area around Kuta has its own feel:
- Kuta – the town itself, with most of the cafés, coworking spaces, gyms and nightlife.
- Gerupuk – a fishing village east of Kuta, with surf breaks reached by boat, and the cheapest of the four.
- Selong Belanak – a wide, calm bay west of Kuta, with beginner waves and villas on the hills.
- Mawun – a horseshoe bay between Kuta and Selong Belanak, with villas and some of the highest prices.

That's Airbnb's search for a whole home for November 2026, for one guest.
It covers 18 listings in each area, read on October 1, 2026, with each price the total for the month in dollars.
Neighboring areas share some listings, as Airbnb's map for each area reaches into the next.
Many of these listings are villas with pools, so a guesthouse room or a long rental found locally costs far less.
Cost of living in Kuta, Lombok for digital nomads
A digital nomad spends about $1,550 a month in Kuta with a furnished place from Airbnb, and much less with a room found locally.
Here's how that breaks down for one person:
| What | A month |
|---|---|
| A furnished studio or one-bedroom | $1,136 |
| Groceries | $216 |
| Eating out | $59 |
| Utilities and phone | $43 |
| Public transport | $29 |
| Leisure | $81 |
| Total | $1,564 |
The rent is the cheapest quarter of the 51 different Airbnb listings I checked across the four areas.
The rest is what a one-person US household spends, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2024 survey, at Indonesia's prices from the World Bank.
A scooter, surf lessons, coworking, insurance and flights come on top.
Where digital nomads work in Kuta, Lombok
Kuta has a few coworking cafés, and most nomads work from them or from their villa.
My coworking finder lists three coworking spaces in Kuta: The Spot, Xeno Hub and The Well.
My free Wi-Fi finder has 19 cafés and restaurants, from The Bus Lombok to Terra.
The internet is the weak point, so ask for a speed test before you book, and keep Indonesian mobile data as a backup for calls.
See them all on a map, with hours, photos and directions, in the coworking space finder and the free Wi-Fi spots finder.
Kuta, Lombok's digital nomad community
Kuta's nomad community is small but growing, made up mostly of surfers, yoga teachers and remote workers escaping Bali's crowds.
Coworking cafés, surf schools and yoga studios are where people meet, and there are regular meetups in town.
Is Kuta, Lombok safe for digital nomads?
I felt very safe in Lombok.
The US State Department rates Indonesia Level 2 in its advisory of July 7, 2026, the same level it gives France, Germany and the UK.
Levels 1 and 2 are both everyday travel, and the US only asks you to reconsider a trip at Level 3.
It names the risk of natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions, demonstrations that can turn violent, and terrorism.
Its only Do Not Travel areas are the provinces of Central Papua and Highland Papua, far from Lombok.
Nomads who've lived in Kuta say the biggest risks are the roads and petty theft, so ride carefully and don't leave bags on your scooter.
I find that as long as you don't do anything stupid, you'll be safe in most places, but you should take precautions anywhere.
Read the full advisory before you book, as it changes.
Getting around Kuta, Lombok
You'll need a scooter in Kuta:
- Scooters – rented by the week or month, and the only easy way to reach the beaches, but you need a license and a helmet.
- Drivers – a car with a driver for the airport and day trips, booked through your host.
- Ride apps – they work in parts of Lombok, but cars and drivers are few around Kuta.
- Walking – fine within the town, but the beaches are spread along the coast.
- The airport – Lombok International Airport (LOP) is about 30 minutes north of Kuta, with flights to Bali, Jakarta and a few other countries.
Fast boats also run from Bali to the Gili Islands and the west of Lombok.
Things to do in Kuta, Lombok
Here are the things people who live in Kuta show visitors first:
- Surfing – lessons at Selong Belanak, and boat trips to the breaks at Gerupuk.
- Tanjung Aan – a curved bay with white sand and clear water, east of Kuta.
- Bukit Merese – the grassy hill above Tanjung Aan, best at sunset.
- Mawun and Selong Belanak – calm bays for swimming and long beach afternoons.
- The Mandalika circuit – the racetrack that hosts MotoGP, on the edge of town.
- Sasak villages – traditional villages of Lombok's Sasak people, like Sade, north of Kuta.
Day trips from Kuta, Lombok
The best-known trip is to the Gili Islands, off Lombok's northwest coast, and the island has more within a few hours.
The Gili Islands
The Gili Islands are three small, car-free islands about 2 hours from Kuta by car and boat.
Go for snorkeling with turtles, sunsets on the beach, and a slower pace than Lombok itself, best over a weekend.
More day trips
Each of these makes a good change from the coast:
- Mount Rinjani – Indonesia's second-highest volcano, climbed on a two- to four-day trek to its crater lake.
- Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu – waterfalls in the jungle on Rinjani's slopes, about 1.5 hours north.
- Tetebatu – a village among rice fields and forest at the foot of Rinjani.
- Senggigi – the beach town on the west coast, near the boats to the Gilis.
Visas for digital nomads in Indonesia
Indonesia has a remote worker visa, and most nomads start with a visa on arrival.
Here are the main options:
- Visa on arrival – 30 days for many passports, including the US, the UK, Australia and most of Europe, extendable once for 30 more.
- E33G remote worker visa – one year, for people employed by a company outside Indonesia who earn at least $60,000 a year.
I checked these facts on September 27, 2026.
Compare Indonesia with every other country in my digital nomad visa finder.
Visas, taxes and residency in Indonesia
Before you plan a long stay, check what your passport allows and what staying does to your taxes:
- Can you stay? – see where your passport goes without a visa on the visa-free countries map, and whether Indonesia has a visa for remote workers in the digital nomad visa finder
- Tax – compare Indonesia's income tax with other countries in tax rates by country
- Tax breaks for new residents – Indonesia has a regime for people who move there; see it in tax breaks for new residents
- Foreign income – Indonesia taxes its tax residents on their income from anywhere; see the rule and its exceptions on the territorial tax map
Each tool reads the official rules, so the answer is for your own passport and income.
Time zone and working hours in Kuta, Lombok
Lombok is on Central Indonesia Time, UTC+8, all year, the same as Bali and Singapore.
That's seven hours ahead of London in the northern summer and eight in winter, so your afternoon is Europe's morning.
US hours are harder: New York is 12 or 13 hours behind, so calls land early in the morning or late at night.
See how many working hours you'd share with your team in my time zone overlap calculator.

Internet in Kuta
In M-Lab's open speed tests within 60 km of Kuta, half came in above 9 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, and the fastest quarter of lines above 24 Mbps.
That's 17,664 download tests from September 2025 to September 2026.
The typical figure counts every line, cheap and mobile ones too; a fiber line in a good apartment or coworking space is closer to the fastest quarter.

No open air quality station is within 25 km of Kuta, so these are estimates from Copernicus's CAMS air model for the surrounding area (an 80 km grid, 2023 to 2025, CC BY 4.0), adjusted to what stations measure elsewhere.
Take them as a guide: the model can be well off in big cities, and a measured figure replaces it once a station opens.
Money in Kuta
A card with no foreign fee and an account that holds several currencies make a stay much cheaper:
- Accounts – the best bank accounts for digital nomads, by where you live
- Cards – what a card costs you abroad in the card fees abroad calculator
- Sending money – the cheapest way to move money there in the money transfer comparison
The finders show only accounts and cards you can open from where you live.
