This free dividend calculator shows what your dividends pay a year now, and what they could pay years from now, taken as cash or reinvested.

Type what's invested and the dividend yield, add what you'd put in a month and your growth guesses, and it shows your income year by year and what it's all worth.

I built it because dividend income is easiest to plan when you can see the year it covers a bill you care about.

Key takeaways

A dividend is a share of a company's profit paid to shareholders, usually on a fixed schedule, Investor.gov says.
The yield is a year's dividends divided by the share price.
Reinvested dividends buy more shares, which pay more dividends.
Yield on cost, your income divided by what you put in, rises as dividends grow.

What is a dividend calculator?

A dividend calculator works out the income an investment pays in dividends, now and over the years ahead.

This one lets you reinvest them or take them as cash, add money every month, and grow the dividend and the price at your own rates.

How it works

The calculator works it out on your device, and your numbers stay there.

Plan your dividend income0/4

Yield and yield on cost

Investor.gov defines a dividend as a portion of a company's profit paid to shareholders. Most pay on a fixed schedule, and some pay special dividends too.

The yield is a year's dividends divided by today's price. Yield on cost divides today's income by what you paid, so it rises as the dividend grows.

Reinvesting

Reinvested, each payment buys more shares at that day's price, and those shares pay dividends of their own. That's compound interest at work.

Taken as cash, your shares stay the same and the income grows only as the dividend does.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: $10,000 at a 3.5% yield, $200 added a month, dividends growing 5% a year and the price 4%, paid quarterly and reinvested for 20 years.

It pays $350 a year at the start and about $6,313 in year 20, about $526 a month.

Over the 20 years it pays about $51,633 in dividends, and the investment is worth about $161,326, against $58,000 put in.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that come up most.

  • Chasing the highest yield, which can mean a dividend about to be cut
  • Forgetting tax on dividends in a taxable account
  • Assuming the dividend grows every year without a break
  • Leaving fund fees out of the return

Who is the dividend calculator for?

It's for anyone building income from investments, and these tools help around it.

Find the year your dividends pay a bill, then build toward the next one.
