A Google Docs to Markdown converter turns a Google Doc into Markdown, the plain-text format AI apps, GitHub, Notion and site builders read.

This free Google Docs to Markdown converter works from a doc's shared link, or from text you copy out of a doc and paste here. It keeps the headings, bold, links, lists and tables, and drops the clutter Docs adds.

Here's how it works, why a plain HTML converter gets Docs wrong, and the 3 ways to get Markdown out of Docs.

key_takeaways.mdTL;DR

Key takeaways

Paste text copied from a doc, or a link shared as Anyone with the link.
Docs marks bold and italics with styles, not tags, so the converter reads the styles.
Docs sends every link through a google.com redirect, and the converter puts the real address back.
Docs can also download Markdown itself, from File, then Download, since July 2024.

What is a Google Docs to Markdown converter?

A Google Docs to Markdown converter is a tool that turns a doc's formatting into Markdown: # for headings, \\ for bold, text for links, and pipes for tables.

This one reads Docs' own quirks, so the formatting comes through as you see it in the doc.

Why a plain HTML converter gets Docs wrong

Docs doesn't mark formatting the way web pages do, so a plain converter loses it:

What Docs doesWhat the converter does
Bold, italics and strikethrough as styles on spansReads the styles and writes **, _ and ~~
Links through https://www.google.com/url?q=Puts the real address back
Code as text in Courier NewWrites it as code
A bold wrapper around the whole copyLeaves it out, so nothing turns bold by mistake
Classes in a style block, in a doc's exportReads the classes the same way

On my test paste, a plain converter kept a stray \\ at the top, lost every bold, italic and code mark, and kept the redirect links. This one kept all of them, with real links.

3 ways to get Markdown out of Google Docs

Each way fits a different job:

  • Download as Markdown – in Docs, File, then Download, then Markdown (.md), since July 2024.
  • Copy as Markdown – Docs' own option, off until you turn on Enable Markdown under Tools, then Preferences.
  • This converter – from a shared link or a paste, with a preview, counts and front matter, and nothing to install.

For a .docx you've downloaded, the Word to Markdown converter keeps the pictures too.

What comes through

The converter keeps what Markdown can show, and drops what it can't:

In the docIn the Markdown
Headings# to ######, at the same level
Bold, italics and strikethrough\*\bold\\*, \italics\ and \~\~strikethrough\~\~
Text in a code fontInline code, in backticks
LinksThe real address, without Google's redirect
Bulleted and numbered lists- and 1. lists, nested as in the doc
TablesMarkdown tables, the first row as the header
ImagesImage links to where Google keeps each one

Colors, fonts and page layout have no Markdown form, so they're left out. Download any image you need to keep, since its link points to Google's copy.

Where to use the Markdown

Markdown from a doc is ready for the tools that read plain text:

  • AI chats – paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, with the structure kept
  • GitHub – a README, a docs page or an issue
  • Static sites – Astro, Hugo, Jekyll and the other site builders that read .md files
  • Notes apps – Obsidian and Notion both take Markdown

The Send to buttons under the result open it in the main AI apps.

Docs' own export vs this converter

Docs can make Markdown itself, so here's what each way gives you:

WayWhat you get
File, then Download, then MarkdownThe whole doc as a .md file, from inside Docs
Copy as MarkdownThe part you select, once Markdown is turned on in Tools, then Preferences
This converterA shared link or a paste, with a preview, counts, front matter and the AI buttons

Google added the first two on July 16, 2024. Use them inside Docs, and this converter when you have a link, a paste, or want the extras.

Tidy it after converting

A quick look catches the few things a conversion can't know:

  • Heading levels – check there's one # heading, and that the levels follow in order
  • Empty headings and lines – remove any left from spacing in the doc
  • Merged table cells – Markdown has none, so check a table that had them
  • Images – save the ones you need, and point the links at your own copies

Then copy or download the Markdown, ready to use.

The link works when the doc is shared as Anyone with the link:

  • In the doc, press Share
  • Under General access, choose Anyone with the link
  • Copy the link, and paste it here

A private doc can't be read by link, so copy its text and paste it instead.

Who is the Google Docs to Markdown converter for?

It's for anyone who writes in Google Docs and publishes somewhere else:

  • Word to Markdown converter – anyone with a .docx file, pictures included
  • URL to Markdown converter – anyone turning a published web page into Markdown
  • Markdown table generator – anyone fixing up a table after the conversion
  • Token counter – anyone checking how many tokens the doc costs an AI model

Write in Docs, then bring it here when it's time to publish.
