What is a Word to Markdown converter?
A Word to Markdown converter rewrites a Word document as Markdown: its headings as #, its lists as - and 1., and its tables with |.
You get a plain text file for AI apps, GitHub, docs sites and note apps.
What it keeps
It reads the styles Word uses, so the structure you made comes through:
- Headings – Title, and Heading 1 to 6, as # to ######.
- Text styles – bold, italic and links.
- Lists – bullets and numbers, nested lists included.
- Tables – as Markdown tables.
- Pictures – as files in an images folder, linked from the Markdown.
Text made to look like a heading with a big bold font, but no heading style, stays a paragraph. Use Word's heading styles, and it comes through.

I converted a test report and a long article with each on September 29, 2026:

CloudConvert turns the Word file into a PDF first and converts that, so the links drop out and the layout guesses the headings.
MarkItDown reads the file the same way this converter does, but writes pictures as data it cuts short.
How I tested
The test report had a title, 2 heading levels, bold, italic, a link, a nested list, a numbered list, a table, a picture and a quote. The article was Wikipedia's page on Markdown, saved as a .docx.
