A free PDF to Markdown converter that finds headings and reading order, and leaves out page numbers, in your browser.
5.0(1 rating)Drop a PDF to turn its text into clean Markdown, with headings and lists. It all happens in this browser.
Your PDF
Everything happens in this browser, so your PDF never leaves your computer. Its text is read with pdf.js, and the headings, paragraphs and reading order are worked out from where the text sits.
This free PDF to Markdown converter turns a PDF's text into clean Markdown, with its headings, lists, links and paragraphs in reading order.
Running headers and page numbers are left out, and 2-column pages read left column first. Nothing is uploaded.
Here's how it reads a PDF, how it did against CloudConvert and MarkItDown, and what it still can't do.
What is a PDF to Markdown converter?
A PDF to Markdown converter pulls the text out of a PDF and writes it as Markdown, with # for headings and - for lists.
A PDF has no headings or paragraphs inside, only text placed on pages. So the converter works them out from where the text sits and how big it is.
How it reads a PDF
It rebuilds the document from the text's size and place on each page:
- Headings – text bigger than the body, and short bold lines, biggest first.
- Reading order – on a 2-column page, the left column, then the right, with titles across both first.
- Paragraphs – lines joined back up, across columns and pages, with words split by a hyphen put back together.
- Lists, links and code – bullets and numbers as lists, the PDF's links kept, monospaced text as code.
- What it drops – running headers, footers, page numbers and side tabs that repeat on every page, and chart labels.
It takes a few seconds for most documents: the 36-page guide below took under 4 in my browser.
Compared with CloudConvert and MarkItDown
I converted a 2-column research paper and a 36-page guide with each on September 29, 2026:
- ResNet paper, 12 pages, 2 columns
- 16 of 16 headings, no page numbers
- FTC guide, 36 pages
- 19 of 19 headings, no page numbers
- Tables
- As lines of text
- ResNet paper, 12 pages, 2 columns
- 16 of 16 headings, 12 page numbers left in
- FTC guide, 36 pages
- 19 of 19 headings, 32 page numbers left in
- Tables
- 15 real tables from the paper
- ResNet paper, 12 pages, 2 columns
- No headings, 24 lone numbers
- FTC guide, 36 pages
- No headings, 32 page numbers
- Tables
- Plain text
CloudConvert's engine rebuilt the paper's tables, which this converter can't yet: here they come through as lines of text. It also left every page number in the text.
MarkItDown gives a PDF back as plain text, with no headings, lists or tables.
How I tested
The paper was "Deep Residual Learning for Image Recognition" from arXiv, and the guide the FTC's "Protecting Personal Information", a public domain PDF. I listed each one's real section headings by hand.
What it can't do
These are the PDFs it can't turn into good Markdown yet:
- Scans – a scanned page is a picture with no text in it, so it comes back empty.
- Tables – their cells come through as lines, not as a Markdown table.
- Unusual layouts – 3 columns, text in boxes and posters can come out in the wrong order.
For documents with lots of tables, check the Markdown against the PDF before you rely on it.
Who is the PDF to Markdown converter for?
It's for anyone who reads PDFs with AI or keeps them as notes:
- ChatGPT prompt generator – anyone asking AI about the document
- Prompt improver – anyone sharpening a prompt around it
- Readability checker – writers checking a report's text
- Words to pages calculator – anyone sizing up how long it is
It works in your browser, so your PDF never leaves your computer.
More free Markdown converters
Here are my other Markdown converters. They all give you the Markdown to copy, download or send to an AI app:
- URL to Markdown – a web page's article as Markdown
- HTML to Markdown – any HTML, pasted or as a file
- Word to Markdown – a .docx with its tables and pictures
Files never leave your browser, and links are read without saving anything.
