At 5,000 contacts, the cheapest paid plan here is Systeme.io at $17 a month, and the middle of the paid plans is $63. Kit's free plan and Substack cost $0 at that size.
What changes the price
What they count. Mailchimp bills for subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts, at the month's peak. MailerLite bills for active subscribers, counting anyone active during the billing cycle. Kit counts unique, active subscribers.
So 5,000 subscribers plus 1,000 unsubscribed contacts land on Mailchimp's 10,000-contact tier: $110 a month instead of $75.
Send limits. Mailchimp Essentials, MailerLite Comfort and Constant Contact Lite let you send 10 times your contact tier a month. Email more often and you move up a tier, or pay for the extra sends.
Billing yearly. At 5,000 subscribers, paying yearly saves from 8% (Flodesk) to 25% (Zoho Campaigns).
First-months discounts. Mailchimp takes 15% off for the first 12 months from 10,000 contacts. Omnisend's page shows 30% off your first 3 months.
Flat plans. HighLevel costs the same at any list size, but charges $0.675 per 1,000 emails through its own sending. Kajabi, ClickFunnels and Systeme.io charge by plan, and each plan comes with a contact limit, except Systeme.io's Unlimited.

What sending itself costs
Amazon SES charges $0.10 per 1,000 emails. A 5,000-person list emailed weekly is 20,000 emails a month: $2.
The rest of any bill is the software: the editor, the forms, the automations and the work that keeps your emails out of spam.
Final thoughts on email marketing costs
Price your list as it is, and as it will be in a year. A tier jump in month 6 changes the answer.
Check what each platform counts before you move, and archive the contacts you'll never email.
Then pick the cheapest platform that does what you need, not the cheapest one.
