This free golf handicap calculator works out your Handicap Index from your recent rounds, by the World Handicap System as the USGA sets it out, and your Course Handicap for today's tees.

Add each round's score with the course's Course Rating and Slope Rating, and it shows your score differentials, the ones that count and your index.

I built it because the USGA's rules are clear once each step is written out, and a calculator shows every one.

Key takeaways

A Score Differential is 113 ÷ the Slope Rating × (your adjusted score − the Course Rating), the USGA's Rule 5.1a says.
With 20 scores, your Handicap Index is the average of your lowest 8.
With 3 to 19 scores, a table sets how many count, and adjusts the lowest few.
Your Course Handicap is your index × the Slope Rating ÷ 113, plus the Course Rating minus par.

What is a golf handicap calculator?

A golf handicap calculator works out your Handicap Index from your recent scores, and the strokes you'd get on a given set of tees.

This one follows the USGA's Rules of Handicapping, step by step.

How it works

The calculator works it out on your device, and your scores stay there.

Work out your handicap0/4

The Score Differential

Rule 5.1a works out each round as 113 ÷ Slope Rating × (adjusted gross score − Course Rating − the playing conditions adjustment), rounded to the tenth.

The playing conditions adjustment runs from −1.0 to +3.0 and is set by your golf association, so the calculator leaves it at 0.

The Handicap Index

Rule 5.2a uses your lowest differentials. With 20 scores it's the average of the lowest 8.

With fewer, a table decides. 3 scores use the lowest 1, minus 2.0; 5 use the lowest 1; 6 use the lowest 2, minus 1.0; and the count grows from there. The index tops out at 54.0.

The Course Handicap

Rule 6.1a turns your index into strokes for the tees you play: Handicap Index × Slope Rating ÷ 113, plus Course Rating minus par, rounded.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: 5 rounds of 90, 88, 95, 86 and 92, on courses rated from 70.8 to 72.6 with slopes of 121 to 132.

The differentials are 15.6, 15.0, 19.2, 14.2 and 17.4. With 5 scores, the lowest 1 counts, so the Handicap Index is 14.2.

On tees with a slope of 130, a rating of 72.0 and a par of 72, that's 16 strokes.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that come up most.

  • Using a gross score with blow-up holes instead of the adjusted gross score
  • Using the Course Rating for different tees than you played
  • Averaging every round instead of the lowest ones
  • Forgetting that only your most recent 20 scores count

Who is the golf handicap calculator for?

It's for golfers who want to know their index before it's posted, and these tools help around it.

Post every score, and let your index track your real game.
