How big GitHub is now

GitHub counts more than 180 million developers. More than 36 million joined in a single year, up 23%: more than one every second.

Those developers created 121 million new repositories in 2025. GitHub now holds 630 million in all, and 395 million public ones, up 19% in a year.

How much of GitHub is AI

AI is the fastest growing part of GitHub:

More than 1.1 million public repos now use an LLM SDK, code that calls a model like GPT, Gemini or Claude. 693,867 of them were created in just 12 months, up 178%.

How young the top projects are

My best GitHub repos list of 382 top open-source projects shows how fast the field turns over. It's a list I curate, so it's a sample, not all of GitHub.

173 of the 382 were created in 2025 or 2026. 105 were created in 2026 alone, and 27 before 2015.

• Look at how many people contribute, not only the stars
• Pin the version you use, so a fast-moving repo can't break your setup
