Here are the numbers at a glance:

• TypeScript became the most used language on GitHub in August 2025 (GitHub Octoverse)
• TypeScript added 1,054,015 contributors in a year, up 66.6% (GitHub Octoverse)
• Python added 850,579 contributors, up 48.8% (GitHub Octoverse)
• Python writes nearly half of all new AI repos: 582,196 of them (GitHub Octoverse)

TypeScript passes Python

GitHub says August 2025 was the first month TypeScript had more contributors than Python, by about 42,000.

Python still leads AI

Python keeps its lead where AI is built.

It writes nearly half of all new AI repositories on GitHub: 582,196 of them, up 50.7% in a year.

The languages behind the top open-source repos

My best GitHub repos list of 382 top open-source projects tells the same story. It's a list I curate, most of it AI agents, MCP servers, self-hosted apps and developer tools.

In my list, TypeScript leads Python by a single repo: 94 against 93. Here's the most-starred repo in each of its top languages:

How to use these numbers

If you want to work with open-source tools:

• Learn to read TypeScript and Python before anything else
• Check a repo's main language before you plan to run or change it
• Reach for the Go and Rust tools when you need something fast on your own machine

You don't need to write code in either language to get value from reading it.
