This free steps to miles calculator turns your steps into miles and kilometers, on the average stride or your own.
Type your steps, pick the average, your stride or a walk you measured, and it shows the distance, the steps a mile and the minutes it takes.
I built it because a step count means more once you can see it as a distance you know.
Key takeaways
What is a steps to miles calculator?
A steps to miles calculator turns a step count into distance, from the length of each step.
This one uses the average, your own stride, or a walk you measured, and shows the time it takes too.
How it works
The calculator works it out on your device, and your numbers stay there.
How many steps are in a mile?
Richardson et al. (2008), a review of pedometer studies, says a 2,000-step walk is about 1 mile for the average person. That's a stride of about 80 centimeters, or 31.7 inches.
Taller people take longer steps and fewer of them a mile, so your own stride gives a closer number.
Measuring your own stride
Walk a distance you know and count your steps: 1 lap of a 400-meter track is 1,312 feet.
Divide the distance by the steps, and pick "Measure it" to use your own number.
Steps and time
A 2011 study supported 100 steps a minute as a moderate walk, and found it runs from 90 to 113 depending on height.
So 10,000 steps is about 100 minutes of walking at a moderate pace.
A worked example
Here's the example the calculator loads: 10,000 steps on the average stride.
That's 5 miles, or about 8.05 kilometers, at 2,000 steps a mile, and about 100 minutes of walking.
Mistakes to avoid
These are the slips that come up most.
- Using a walking stride for a run, when running steps are longer
- Measuring 1 step instead of averaging 10
- Counting steps on a phone left on a desk
- Using the average stride when you're much taller or shorter than average
Who is the steps to miles calculator for?
It's for walkers, step counters and anyone with a step goal, and these tools help around it.
- Calories burned calculator – for what a walk burns
- Running pace calculator – for your pace and race times
- TDEE calculator – for what you burn in a day
Measure your stride once, and every step count after it turns into a real distance.
