What is a virtual background?
A virtual background is a picture your video app puts behind you, in place of your room.
The app finds you in every frame of your camera and swaps everything else for the picture. A branded one puts your logo behind you on every call.
Sizes for Zoom, Teams, Riverside and more
Most calls and streams are 16:9, so most backgrounds are too. Here's what each app asks for, from its own help page, which I checked on September 29, 2026:

1920 x 1080 works in every call app here. Pick 4K for a sharper background on a big screen in Teams, which takes up to 3840 x 2160.
Riverside takes files under 4 MB, so an HD JPG is the safe pick there. StreamYard and Riverside both put your background behind you with no green screen.
Vertical 9:16 backgrounds for your phone
Pick 9:16 for a phone. TikTok's Green Screen effect lets you pick any photo on your phone as the background, then record in front of it.
Ecamm's help says to make a background the same size and shape as your broadcast. So a vertical show in Ecamm Live wants a 9:16 background too.

Add your logo as a watermark
Add your logo, then pick a top corner, since your head covers the middle.
Turn down Opacity for a quiet watermark that sits back in the room. A PNG with a see-through background looks best.
See what your head hides
Your head and shoulders cover the middle of the background, so anything there is hidden.
The preview puts a person in front, framed the way a camera frames you. Switch to Outline to see only the shape, and keep your logo clear of it.
The person is only in the preview, never in the download.
Why it looks backwards to you
Zoom can show you your own video mirrored, like a mirror would. Zoom's help says its Mirror my video setting only changes what you see.
Riverside's help says the same: your background looks mirrored in your own preview, and the right way round in the recording.
Turn on Mirror here to preview it the way you'll see yourself. Download it as it is, or everyone else sees your logo backwards.
Frosted glass in Teams
Microsoft's help page says a see-through PNG uploaded as a Teams background shows your room behind it as frosted glass.
Pick See-through, add your logo, and download the PNG.
Photos that work
A calm photo works best: a tidy room, a view, a wall or a texture.
The 10 photos here are rooms and views from Pexels, and each one's credit shows under the preview. Search free photos for more, or use your own.
Busy photos make your edges harder for the app to find. Turn up Blur to soften them, or Darken so your logo stands out.
